Double Victory For C.B.C.

Christian Brothers College qualified for the Semi Finals of the Bowen Shield and McCarthy Cup with home victories.

For the second successive week C.B.C. defeated St. Munchin’s 11-5 at Lansdowne in the Bowen Shield to book a semi final tie away to Crescent College Comprehensive next week.
This was a lot tougher tie then last week’s encounter which the Cork side also won 24-11.
Munchin’s dominated the opening half territorially but were unable to convert this advantage into scores. Second Row Ezra Nugent dominated the lineouts and the rolling maul from this advantage saw the Limerick side gain a lot of ground but they were unable to pierce a solid Christians defence.
Thomas Quinlan kicked a penalty after ten minutes to put the Cork side ahead. And he was on hand again in the third minute of first half injury time to gather a loose ball following a Christians tactic of hacking the ball up field at every opportunity, to score a try in the corner for an 8-0 interval lead. It was unclear if the try would be awarded as the touch judge had raised his flag but the ref over ruled him.
Quinlan made it 11-0 with his second penalty nine minutes into the second half.
In one final effort Ben Kilkenny got in for a try for Munchin’s in injury time and from the kick off Munchin’s went through the phases in an effort to score a second try but a knock on put paid to their chances and the final whistle sounded to the delight of the home side.

Christians got revenge for last season’s defeat in the McCarthy Cup Final when they defeated Castletroy College 14-10 at Lansdowne to book an away semi final tie against Crescent Comprehensive next week.
Ben O’Callaghan scored a try for Christians and Michael O’Halloran kicked three penalties. Oisin Kelly replied with a try for Castletroy and Conor Fleming kicked a conversion and penalty.

In the other quarter final tie Rockwell had a narrow 6-3 home win over Glenstal Abbey. Bill Johnston kicked two penalties for Rockwell and Tim Stafford replied with a penalty for Glenstal. Rockwell will now be away to Ard Scoil Ris in next week’s semi final.

RESULTS:

Bowen Shield Quarter Final: C.B.C. 11, St. Munchin's 6;

McCarthy Cup Quarter Finals:

C.B.C. 14, Castletroy College 10;

Rockwell 6, Glenstal Abbey 3;
