Fantastic Participation At Tralee Coaching Course

23 coaches from clubs across Kerry descended upon Tralee IT last weekend for the west Munster Mini Coaching course.

This two-day course was specifically designed for coaches of Mini rugby (6yrs-12yrs), where players are being introduced to rugby for the first time. It allowed coaches to achieve Stage 1 accreditation from the IRFU.

Across the two days a diverse and comprehensive range of modules were presented to participants including:
• Role of the coach (from Ed Barnes, coach of the Tralee women’s team)
• Nutrition
• How to teach skills
• Physical literacy – movement and the physical growth of a young player
• Playing the game – upskilling young players through playing the game

Ken O’Connell, Munster Rugby Community Rugby Officer (CRO) saw last weekend’s course as a fruitful and enjoyable experience.

“The audience were fantastic – fully engaged and worked really hard for the two days. It’s not a necessity for coaches to achieve this accreditation but it’s something we actively encourage. The interest and enthusiasm shown by the Mini coaches over the weekend will greatly benefit the next generation of players in west Munster.

“The facilities in Tralee IT were superb and a lot of hard work was put in by Munster Rugby CROs John O’Neill, Finny O’Regan and in particular Ray Gadsden, CRO for West Munster.

“Also, a quick word of thanks for Brian O’Sullivan, brother of John (former Munster player) who catered the event. The food was top notch, and once the grub is good, that’s the main thing”, O’Connell added laughing.
