Foreign Students Attend Rugby & English Camp

Munster Rugby in conjunction with the Cork English College is currently hosting a rugby camp for foreign students at Cork Institute of Technology.

A total of 51 students ranging in ages from 13 to 16 are taking part in the two week course, designed to develop their rugby stills through the English language.

In its second year running, the course offers a combination of language tuition in the mornings with rugby and cultural activities in the afternoons and evenings.

Facilitated by Munster Community Rugby Officers Ray Gadsden and Finny O’Regan, with the assistance of Eugene McCarthy and former Munster prop Darragh Hurley, the coaching focuses on all aspects of the game which include tackling, taking the ball into contact, ball handling skills and performing skills under pressure.

Students also take part in theory based modules such as nutrition, hydration, core strength as well as strength and conditioning.

Three evening activities per week are also included in the programme and this Saturday the students will travel to Limerick city to take a tour of Thomond Park Stadium.

Speaking on behalf of Munster Rugby, Damon Urlich, Community Rugby Manager stated “we would like to welcome all the foreign students to Cork and are delighted the programme is going from strength to strength since its pilot season last year. We look forward to further developing our partnership with the Cork English College and wish the students well with their rugby and educational endeavours.”

Commenting on the programme Marc Cullen, CEC – Cork English College said “we are delighted with the great success of our English and Rugby Programme with Munster Rugby. This year marks the second year of the partnership between CEC and Munster Rugby and we have in excess of 50 rugby players from 8 different countries on the programme. We look forward to a growing the programme over the next few years to welcome students from all over the world”.


CEC is Cork’s oldest English language college and welcomes in excess of 3,500 students to Cork every year. CEC also run a variety of other English and sports camps such as Horse-Riding, Golf, Sailing and Soccer. For more information please visit www.corkenglishcollege.ie
