Garryowen Only Munster Winners In Division 1A

Garryowen were the only Munster side to win in Division 1A of the Ulster Bank League as Bruff ended their losing streak with a home victory in Division 1B.

Young Munster 14, Garryowen 21

Garryowen won the latest all-Limerick Ulster Bank League clash at Clifford Park but they were hard pressed to hold out in a hectic finish.

Garryowen made the perfect start with penalties by Jamie Gavin after two and eight minutes and it was all of 36 minutes before Brian Haugh opened the Young Munster account with a penalty but just on half time Aaron McCloskey had a Garryowen try which Gavin converted to make it 11-3 at the interval.
Two minutes into the second half Haugh kicked a second Young Munster penalty but three minutes later Garryowen were awarded a penalty try when the home side collapsed a scrum. Gavin popped over the conversion and then added a penalty to make it 21-6.

On the hour Young Munster had a try, credited to Luke Russell as the pack drove over from a maul and Haugh landed a penalty to earn a losing bonus point.

Shannon 3 St Mary's College 10

Coonagh was a place for the brave and the fainthearted as Shannon picked up their second losing bonus point of the campaign in atrocious conditions of strong wind and constant heavy rain.
Rob Hudson had St Mary's in front with a try when he rounded off a good movement.
The visitors doubled their score when Kevin Cooke won the race for the touchdown after a long kick from halfway.
Shannon had to be content with a penalty by Rob Guerin but again they showed plenty of spirit.

U.L. played Lansdowne in the back pitch in the Aviva Stadium and the Limerick side were no match for the leaders.
Martin McPhail gave the visitors an early lead and a conversion and two penalties by Ben Martin left the visitors trailing 19-13 at the break. However it was all Lansdowne in the second half as they added two converted tries and a penalty to their total.

Old Belvedere 44, Cork Constitution 13.

Cork Constitution’s recent revival came unstuck at Anglesea Road as Old Belvedere ran out comprehensive winners.
Two Johnny Holland penalties left the visitors trailing 8-6 at half time. Con’s only answer to a one side second half was a try from skipper Gerry Hurley which Holland converted.

Dolphin 18, Clontarf 20.

A dramatic penalty by Darragh Fitzpatrick in the tenth minute of injury time earned Clontarf a narrow two point win over Dolphin at Musgrave Park. The Dublin side led 10-5 at half time with Miah Cronin scoring a try for Dolphin under the posts but the reliable Barry Keeshan missed the conversion. The home side rallied after the break and a try by skipper Rory Scannell and a conversion and two penalties by Keeshan had the home side ahead until Fitzpatrick’s late strike.

Bruff 21, Belfast Harlequins 17.

Bruff ended their recent poor run with a narrow win over Belfast harlequins at Kilballyowen Park, a result that puts a dent on the Ulster side’s promotion hopes.
A try by Tom O’Callaghan and a conversion and penalty by Brian Carroll had the home side 10-3 ahead at half time. Maurice O’Connell added a second half try for the winners and Carroll kicked two further points but a late rally by the visitors was not enough to secure the points.

A nine try feast at Woodleigh Park as Highfield kept their Division 2A promotion hopes alive with a deserved victory.
Six of the tries came in the opening thirty minutes, three a piece and it was only in the final ten minutes that the remaining tries were scored.

In an exciting opening half Queens took the lead on three occasions and each time they were pegged back.
Highfield led 22-19 at the break and looked in control entering injury time 40-28, but a few nervous moments before the final whistle saw Highfield hold out.

Elsewhere in Division 2A, Cashel went down to leaders Banbridge 25-12 but they did become the first side to prevent the Co. Down side from getting a bonus point victory. Pat O’Connor kicked three penalties and Conor Quinlan added a drop goal.

U.C.C. kept up their recent good run with a bonus point victory over Greystones that sees them draw level with second placed Terenure, four points behind leaders Banbridge.

For the other two Munster sides in this Division, it was not good news. Old Crescent lost at home to Old Wesley 25-15. James O’Neill and Brendan Guilfoyle scored tries for Crescent and Shane Mullally kicked a penalty and a conversion.

Two Paul Daly penalties were not enough for Midleton who lost 30-6 away to Corinthians.

In Division 2B Nenagh Ormond pulled themselves into the promotion race with a 35-20 away win over Instonians at Shaws Bridge. Sam Nash scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Michael Fogarty and Derek Corcoran got one each. Donal Fogarty kicked three conversions and three penalties.

Thomond went down to their fourth defeat of the campaign with 22-16 away defeat by Navan. Kevin O’Mahony got all their scores a try, conversion and three penalties.

Clonakilty slumped to a heavy defeat away to NUIM Barnhall going down 72-0.

Sunday’s Well will be very disappointed not to have picked up at least a losing bonus point away to Suttonians when they conceded a late try as they lost 24-17.
Despite playing with the advantage of the elements in the opening half the Well trailed 14-13 at half time. Shane O’Sullivan scored the ‘Well’s try and Shane O’Riordan added two penalties and a conversion.
