Girls Rugby Set To Entertain Thomond Park

Thomond Park will make history during the Heineken Cup quarter final this Saturday, 6th April when for the first time, girls rugby will be the half time match entertainment which will see Thurles U15’s take on their Mallow counterparts.

The occasion will be a huge boost for girls rugby in the province and promises to be an entertaining spectacle for all supporters.

Thurles

Thurles RFC has a proud tradition of age grade girls rugby, having completed in the Munster leagues at both Under 15 and Under 18 levels.

The club were league winners at both 7’s and 15’s in 2012 and have maintained a presence on the Munster Under 18 and Under 19 representative teams ever since.

Thurles also fields a senior women’s team who are currently preparing for their league semi final against Waterford side Dungarvan.

On Saturday the Thurles Under 15 side will be joined by fellow players from Youghal and Fethard rugby clubs, with whom they have been combining for the 2013/14 season to compete in the Munster Under 15 league.

Mallow

Since its inception in 2006 girls’ rugby has grown from strength to strength and with an increase in playing numbers are competing at Under 18, Under 15 and Under 13 age-grade.

Last season Mallow RFC were crowned U14 and U18 Munster champions and their success has continued into this season.

Club players Niamh O’Sullivan and Irene Herlihy represented the Ireland U19 combined provinces in 7’s rugby last September. The club also boasts 9 players on the Munster Under 18 squad this season as girls rugby continues to develop within the club.

Mallow’s Under 18’s and Under 15’s are currently in their respective league finals this season where they face Carrick-on-Suir Under 18 and Shannon Under 15.

Munster Rugby would like to wish both sides an enjoyable experience on Saturday.
