Highfield’s Peter O’ Rourke Wins Volunteer Award
17th April 2008 By Munster Rugby
Munster Rugby is delighted to congratulate Peter O’Rourke of Highfield RFC on becoming the latest winner of the Right Price Tiles Volunteer of the Month award.
Peter took his first steps in rugby as a youngster with Cobh Pirates RFC. From there he progressed to Midleton College and Garryowen FC until eventually finding his niche at Highfield RFC in 1999. From the very first day he walked into the club he has contributed immensely. Peter initially helped to coach from Under 8s to Under 12s before taking on the role of Youth Registrar in 2004.
This is a vital role in the Club especially as there are approximately 400 underage players registered at Highfield, making it one of the most vibrant and successful sections in all of Munster. Peter oversees the proper registration of all these players as well as acting as subscriptions secretary to ensure they are fully paid up youth members.
If that wasn’t enough he has also taken on the job of Under 16 manager this year arranging matches, transport etc for the team. Obviously not one to seek the easy life, Peter decided he needed still more on his plate and is involved in producing the Highfield Club newsletter!
Despite all his off the field work, Peter still manages to contribute to Highfield’s on the pitch success through the involvement of his two sons’ Breifne and Neil in Highfield underage teams.
Peter’s character is perhaps best summed up by fellow club member John O’Hea. “Peter is one of those workers who is rarely seen as he just quietly goes about his business and doesn’t look for any credit. He is one of the clubs most dedicated members and I have no hesitation in putting his name forward for the volunteer recognition programme”.
The Right Price Tiles Volunteer Recognition Programme was launched to give clubs and schools the opportunity to acknowledge the significant contribution made by individuals and groups who have developed, promoted and/or advanced the sport of Rugby in the local community and in the province. Through the Volunteer Recognition Programme, Munster Rugby would like to acknowledge and reward these individuals who devote countless hours’ week in week out, year after year to provide a safe and enjoyable environment at the grassroots of the game.
This is the third Volunteer Award for the season with the programme running through to the end of April 2008. The Volunteer Recognition programme is open to any person or group of people currently associated with domestic rugby in Munster, in a non-paid capacity at a club, school, college, university or associated affiliate of Munster Branch IRFU.
