The Munster Women’s squad, sponsored by Keane’s jewellers, claimed a 27-6 bonus point victory over Connacht in round two of the Women’s Interprovincial Series at The Sportsground on Saturday.

Try not shown (Christine Coffey – Munster).

Munster were razor sharp from kick-off with Christine Coffey opening the scoring in the third minute. Claire Keohane’s ambitious skip-pass paid off in the 25th minute when Laura Sheehan caught the ball on her own 22 and sprinted away for Munster’s second try.

It got better for Connacht. Meabh Deely is establishing herself as one of the best kickers in the competition and and an athletic take in the air from Edel McMahon gave the young out-half the chance to kick her second penalty of the afternoon.

Munster responded with ruthless efficiency after the break as Sheehan scored again and Head Coach Laura Guest emptied the bench to give Ireland captain Ciara Griffin the chance to return to action and make an offload cameo in the run-up to fellow replacement Niamh Kavanagh’s try.

Railway Union winger Steph Carroll made her Munster debut off the bench while Connacht gave a first start to Alex O’Connor.

Edel Murphy capped the scoring with Munster’s 11th try in 2 games.

It was another positive outing for Munster and their co-captain Eimear Considine. “We set an aim before the game to not concede any tries,” she said. “We’re happy with that plus the bonus point win is always good.

“We’re looking forward to playing Leinster next week and hopefully three wins out of three which will set us up with a good semi-final spot.”

Munster Women face Leinster in round three at Irish Independent Park on Saturday 31 August, kick-off 3pm – €5 adults, U18s go FREE.
