John O’Neill Memorial Blitz Held In Waterpark RFC

A view of the third annual John O'Neill Memorial Blitz held in Waterpark RFC earlier this month.

Earlier this month, the third annual John O’Neill memorial blitz took place in Waterpark RFC in Waterford.

John O’Neill was a Rugby Development Officer with Munster Rugby for many years and he sadly passed away in 2020.

O’Neill was a pivotal figure in helping increase participation and grow the sport for all ages in the Waterford and East Munster region.

Eight teams from five schools from the region competed on the day; Cashel Community College, St Declans, Waterpark College, Newtown and De La Salle. 150 1st year U14 players were involved on the day.

De La Salle were the winners beating Newtown in the final and the winning captain from De La Salle was presented with a trophy from the O’Neill family. Waterpark president Noel Phelan also presented plaques to two players who had impressed throughout the blitz.

Athletic Development Coach Ken Byrnes was also present on the day and he conducted the warm-ups for each of the teams.

The Rugby Development Department would like to thank the O’Neill family and Waterpark RFC for providing food and drinks for the players and coaches.
