Munster Schools Boys Junior Cup Round-Up

It was busy day in the Munster Schools Boys Junior Cup as Ardscoil Rís, PBC and Crescent College Comprehensive all recorded wins.

See below for a roundup of the day’s action.

Ardscoil Rís 24 – 5 Glenstal Abbey | Thomond Park, 1pm

Ardscoil Rís booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Junior Cup thanks to a 24-5 win over Glenstal Abbey in Thomond Park.

The North Circular Road school capitalised on an early penalty miss from Glenstal when they went over for the game’s opening try through Darragh Leyden which was converted by James Butler. Ardscoil went further ahead with a try through Aaron Kelly. The conversion was missed as Ardscoil took a 12-0 lead into the break.

On the resumption of the second half, Glenstal got back into the game with a try from Teak Williams but the conversion was wide of the posts.

Ardscoil hit back with a try from Butler but he was unable to convert his own score as Ardscoil went further ahead at 17-5. Butler was on target for his next conversion after Leo Connolly went over for a try with the game finishing 24-5 to Ardscoil Rís.

The Limerick school will now meet Rockwell College in the quarter-finals.

PBC 27 – 14 Rockwell College | Musgrave Park, 2.30pm

PBC secured their passage into the semi-finals after an entertaining 27-14 win over Rockwell College at Musgrave Park.

The Cork school got the first try of the game through Cormac Bohan which Daniel Murphy converted to give them an early 7-0 lead. Jonah McCarthy hit back for Rockwell College with a try for the Tipperary school after some good work from Danny Morris. The try was converted by Sean Kovacs to level the game.

Rockwell could have taken the lead soon after but Kovacs penalty attempt went to the right and wide

Towards the end of the first, Rockwell received a yellow card and PBC capitalised through a try from Fionn O’Sullivan. The conversion was missed but the Cork school went over for their third try soon after from Tom Murray which was converted by Murphy to give PBC a 19-7 half-time lead.

Rockwell got that all-important first score of the second-half when Ian Ryan crossed for his school which was converted by Kovacs to reduce the deficit to 19-14.  PBC extended their lead through a penalty in front of the posts from Murphy with the score reading 22-14 at the midway point of the second half.

With Rockwell attacking, a misplaced pass saw Bohan latch onto the ball to sprint clear and score an important try for PBC. The missed conversion saw the Cork school lead 27-14 and that’s how it finished as PBC secure their spot in the semi-finals while Rockwell will have another chance as they meet Ardscoil Rís in the quarter-finals.

Crescent College 33 – 26 CBC | Thomond Park, 3pm

Crescent College Comprehensive booked their place in the quarter-finals thanks to a 33-26 win over CBC in Thomond Park.

Ryan Scanlon opened the scoring for Crescent with a try which was converted by Fionn Rowsome. Gerry Joyce got Crescent’s second try soon after which was unconverted as the Limerick school to a 12-0 lead.

CBC hit back through a try from Charlie O’Callaghan which was converted by Caleb McKinnie. Crescent went further ahead with a try from Adedamola Obasa which was converted by Rowsome which gave the Limerick school a 19-7 lead at half-time.

CBC’s Christopher Taylor got over at the start of the second half which was converted by McKinnie to reduce the deficit to 19-14. Crescent responded with a try from Gavin Tobin that was converted by Rowsome to extend the Limerick school’s lead to 26-14.

The back and forth nature of the second half continued as CBC got another try through Sean Lavin which was converted by McKinnie before Cian Enright got over for Crescent which was converted by Rowsome to leave the score at 33-21.

CBC then scored through David MacCoitir which went unconverted but it finished 33-26 as Crescent now look forward to a quarter-final with the loser of tomorrow’s Round 2 clash between St Munchin’s College and Castletroy College.
