Junior Roundup & Results

Clonmel take another step closer to regaining their Munster Junior League title.

It was a good weekend for the three Munster clubs that did take part in the opening round of the All Ireland Junior Cup with all three advancing to the quarter finals.

The only disappointment was Bandon giving Enniskillen a walk over because of the unavailability of players to travel.

Clonmel were pushed all the way at home to Westport before emerging 28-23 winners in a game that saw the lead change hands on several occasions. It was 16-15 to the home side at half time where Luke Hogan scored two tries for Clonmel and Luke Noonan got one. Dylan Cadogan kicked three penalties and two conversions.

Kilfeacle defeated Monivea 24-5 to book their place in the quarter finals at the Connacht venue. Kevin Kinnane scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Gavin Heuston scored one. Jamie Heuston kicked three conversions and Shane Luby added a penalty.

Newcastle West bounced back from their heavy defeat in Waterpark last week with a surprising 30-25 home win over a fancied Enniscorthy side. Dave Foley, Darragh Tracey and Brian O’Sullivan scored tries for the west Limerick outfit; Sean Herlihy kicked three conversions and two penalties with Tommy Kelliher also adding a penalty.

The draw for the quarter finals are – Ballina v Instonians, Ashbourne v Clonmel, Connemara v Kilfeacle and Enniskillen v Newcastle West.

Ties are to be played Saturday 11th November.

In the only competitive game this weekend, Muskerry defeated Castleisland 37-8 to reach the quarter finals of the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield where they will have a home tie against Crosshaven in the quarter finals.

This was Muskerry’s first win of the season and it will give this young side great confidence for the remainder of the season.

Castleisland dominated for long stages of the opening half but failed to turn their advantage into scores. Sean O’Riordan and Dave Hennessy scored two tries for Muskerry and Jonathan Buckley and Shane Godsil got one each. Buckley kicked two conversions and a penalty. John McCarthy replied with a try for Castleisland and Connie Reynolds kicked a penalty.

Tralee booked their place in the final of the McElligott Cup with a 24-0 home win over Killarney. Fearghal O’Nuaillain scored two tries and Conor O’Nuaillain got one. Jack Quilter converted all three and added a penalty.
