Junior Round Up & Results

The final round of games in the Munster Junior League were disrupted by the weather as only five of the fourteen scheduled games were played and one game was abandoned.

As a result of these postponements neither the Junior League winners nor relegation from both Division 1 and 2 have yet been decided. Finding dates to reschedule these outstanding games is going to prove difficult.

Newcastle West completed their First Division program with a 42-12 away win at Grove Island against already relegated St. Mary’s.

This result puts Newcastle West top of the table a point ahead of Clonmel.

Sean Murphy, Tali Tuaau, Brian O’Sullivan, Donal O’Sullivan, James Kelly and Kealan Headd scored tries for Newcastle West and Sean Herlihy converted all six tries. Fionn Scannell replied with two tries for Mary’s and Alan Kiely added a conversion.

Clonmel’s home game with Bandon was called off just before the kick-off having been passed fit by the referee earlier in the day. This game has now been refixed for St. Patrick’s Day with Clonmel just needing two points from the fixture to be crowned champions.

Kilfeacle were leading Abbeyfeale 10-0 with tries from Keith Burke and Conor O’Sullivan when the game was abandoned because of heavy snow falling.

The Galbally v Crosshaven games was brought forward to Saturday and Crosshaven came out on top 26-10 winners.

This result moves Crosshaven up to seventh in the table but Galbally with their program completed are still not sure of their place in the top flight and will have to wait on the result of the outstanding games which will decide what club(s) will be playing in Division 2 next season. Darren O’Keeffe scored two tries for Crosshaven and Killian O’Keeffe and Tim Marron got one each. Cian McGovern kicked three conversions. Gordon Peters and Brendan O’Halloran replied with tries for Galbally.

In Division 2, Mallow completed their program undefeated after their 48-3 home win over Waterford City and they were presented with the Junior League trophy after the match. Sean Glynn scored two of the winner’s eight tries with Jimmy Glynn, Owen Glynn, Dave Walsh, Sean Hannon, Conor O’Donovan and Mike O’Flynn getting one each. Jimmy Glynn kicked four conversions and Darren Walsh replied with a penalty for Waterford City.

Clonakilty completed their program with twelve wins from thirteen after they defeated Youghal 33-19. This result relegates Youghal to the Third Division. Youghal led 12-5 at half time with four penalties from Keith McCarthy. Courtney canning scored two tries for Clon’ and Damien Kozik, Olan Deane and Rob Howick Finglas got one each. Eoghan Deasy added four conversions. Jack Monaghan was Youghal’s try scorer and McCarthy converted.

Muskerry defeated Fethard 7-6 to secure their Second Division status. Adam Looney was Muskerry’s try scorer and Jonathan Buckley converted.

Killarney defeated Mitchelstown 11-6 in their Division 3 promotion play-off. Peter Kelly scored Killarney’s try and Oisin O’Shea added two penalties. Pa McGee replied with two penalties for Mitchelstown.
