Junior Roundup & Weekend Results

Action from UCC v Navan in the All-Ireland U20 Cup - Colbert O'Sullivan

The Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup Final  will be between Young Munster and Bandon on Easter Sunday  (16th April) at Thomond Park after both sides emerged victorious in yesterday’s semi final ties.

Holders Young Munster booked their place in the final after a dramatic finish to their tie at Clanwilliam Park.

Clanwilliam raced into a 13-0 lead in the opening half with a try from Sean Maher and a conversion and two penalties by Niall Leahy.

A try by Ellie Mundi converted by Paul Downes gave Clanwilliam a 13-5 half time lead.

Indiscipline by Clanwilliam was to prove costly for the home side as Downes kicked four penalties to put the “Cookies” ahead 19-13.

On eighty minutes Clanwilliam were awarded a penalty try and Darragh Burke converted to give Clan’ a 20-19 lead to the delight of the home crowd, but four minutes of added time Downes booked Munsters place in the decider with his fifth penalty.

Bandon followed up their Challenge Clubs Cup win over Clonmel earlier in the season with a 21-10 victory in the second semi final at Old Chapel.

This was the league champions’ second successive defeat and does not auger well for their All Ireland Provincial League campaign that starts next week with a home tie against Ballina.

Playing into the wind in the opening half Bandon got off to a great start with a try from Gearoid Crowley after six minutes. Conor Cooney missed a penalty before landing one in the 23rd minute for Clonmel.

A great display by the Bandon pack where Daniel Swithenbank, Enda Phelan and Tom Ferguson were excellent saw the home side take a 5-3 interval lead with wind advantage in the second half.

Three penalties from Kerry Desmond on 43, 47 and 50 minutes extended Bandon’s advantage to 14-5.

A try from Olan Crowley twelve minutes from time converted by Desmond sealed the win for the home side.

Gregg Carroll score a consolation try for Clonmel in the dying minutes and Cooney converted.

Thurles defeated Nenagh Ormond 21-5 in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Plate Final to win the trophy for a record fifth occasion.

Adrian Burke and Paddy Phelan scored tries for Thurles, John Lillis kicked a penalty and a conversion, Aidan O’Dwyer added a penalty and a drop goal. Michael Slattery was Nenagh’s try scorer.

The two remaining games in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League were played over the weekend.

Newcastle West have finished as runners up to Clonmel after their 13-13 draw at Kilfeacle on Friday night.

Kilfeacle have moved ahead of Clanwilliam into fourth place and qualify for the All Ireland Junior Cup next season.

The visitors led 10-7 at half time with Kevin Kinnane scoring Kilfeacle’s try and Gavin Heuston converted.

Heuston kicked two penalties for Kilfeacle after the break.

Richmond defeated St. Senan’s 34-14 with three tries in the final quarter of the game in their outstanding game.

Jeff McNamara opened the scoring with a try for Richmond but a try by Martin Corbett converted by Dale O’Loughlin gave Senan’s a 7-5 half time lead.

Tom Cronin extended Senan’s advantage with a try which O’Loughlin converted.

A fitter Richmond side dominated the remainder of the game with tries from Dara Oxley, Darragh Joyce, Stephen Gallagher and Eoin Hanley. Tadgh Bennett kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Killorglin and Killarney will contest the Division Three playoff final next Sunday to decide who will be promoted to Division Two next season after both sides recorded home wins in the semi finals.

Tries from Cathal Doyle and Liam Foley plus a conversion and four penalties by Luke O’Shea gave Killorglin a 24-17 win against Fethard.

A last minute penalty by Paudie Sheahan earned Killarney a 25-23 victory over Dungarvan. Alan Mulligan, Brian Lynch and Paul O’Sullivan scored tries for Killarney and Sheahan kicked two penalties and two conversions. Martin Houlihan replied with three tries for Dungarvan and David Hickey kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Crosshaven booked their place in the semi final of the O’Neill Cup with a hard earned 19-18 away win over Mitchelstown. Darren O’Keeffe, Eamonn Ring and Michael Lynch scored tries for Crosshaven and Lynch added two conversions.

Dolphin are through to the final of the Junior Two Cup South after a dramatic drop goal from prop Aidan Foley in injury time earned Dolphin a 13-12 win over Cobh Pirates. Rory O’Sullivan and Nigel Murphy scored tries for Dolphin and Ian Jones replied with four penalties for the Pirates.

Highfield will now face Cork Constitution next week in the second semi final after the Woodleigh Park side defeated Mallow 39-12 at the north Cork venue in their quarter final tie. Eoghan McNally scored three tries for the winners and Damian Mullins, Jack Butler and Baptiste Verge got one each. David Eustace kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Aidan Twomey and Christian Reid-Smith replied with tries for the home side and Kieran Wills kicked a conversion.

There was no joy for the four Munster sides in the Frazer McMullen Under 20 Cup as all four sides lost.
