Junior Rugby Preview
27th January 2012 By Munster Rugby
There are sixteen ties in the fourth round of the Munster Junior Cup the round where all the top sides make their entry in the competition.
The tie of the round is the meeting of Galbally at home to Cork Constitution a game that has all the ingredients of what makes this competition so great.
Galbally who were languishing in the Third Division of the Munster Junior League until their promotion in 2009 have come on leaps and bounds since then, as they won the Second Division title last season and this year have acquitted themselves in the top flight challenging for the title. They face the side that are always there or there abouts and the Temple Hill side will be aiming for their nineteenth title this season and make amends for last season’s disappointing final defeat by Cashel.
Constitution are unbeaten in the Seconds League but this will be their toughest test of the season and they will have to use all their experience to grind out a result and book a place in the next round.
There are several ties that could produce some major shocks. Second Division leaders Mallow entertain U.C.C. The north Cork side are very close to achieving their target of promotion to the First Division next season and a lot will depend on whether they will want a cup run or not and may rest some of their top players. The students have been disappointing for the last few seasons and this term because of loss of players to other clubs and injuries to their first team they have failed to make an impression.
Carrick-on-Suir are the only Third Division side left in the Cup and they face a daunting task away to Kilfeacle. The First Division side are battling against relegation but they need a win to boost morale. Carrick’ are still in the promotion race and they will give their opponents a stiff examination.
Holder’s Cashel after an impressive win over Abbeyfeale in the last round face a tougher test this time when they travel to Bruff and will have their work cut out if they are to advance.
The big game in Limerick is the meeting of U.L. Bohemian and Garryowen. Bohs are having a poor season and will have to show a big improvement if they are to overcome the Dooradoyle side.
There are several Senior club v Junior club clashes. Second Division Newcastle West are at home to Shannon and they could give make things difficult for their opponents.
A young Waterpark side could cause an upset at home to Thomond but Dolphin at home to Clanwilliam and Young Munster away to Cobh Pirates will be expected to advance.
Midleton entertain Crosshaven and this could go either way.
Clonmel will be looking for a good Cup run after a poor league campaign, but they will have their work cut at home to high flying Kinsale.
Kanturk who are second in Division One are at home to St. Mary’s the side that are second in Division Two and the Limerick side will be out cause an upset.
There are three all First Division clashes. The Quaid brothers Conor and Liam will be in opposition when Old Christians play Tralee at Rathcooney. The Kerry side had a big win in the league a few weeks ago and the home side will be anxious to make amends this time.
Junior league leaders Richmond are away to St. Senan’s and the Limerick side are within sight of their third league title and may now focus on the Junior Cup and may prove too strong for the Clare side.
Thurles relegated last week from the First Division face a long trip to Skibbereen and the West Cork will be favourites to advance.
Ennis and Scariff meet for a second successive week and after last week’s 18-3 win in the league Ennis will fancy their chances of a repeat victory.
There are five games in the Munster Junior Plate. Newport entertain Presentation in a repeat of their Cup game, Old Crescent are at home to Highfield, Muskerry play Ballincollig and Dungarvan host Douglas.
