Junior Rugby Preview
23rd March 2018 By Leonard Allen
The final series of games in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League are down for decision this weekend, but some Clubs have games in hand so winners, top four and relegation may not be resolved.
Bandon could clinch the title for the first time since 1993 if they record a maximum point home win over Newcastle West. The West Cork side claimed pole position ahead of Richmond following their 36-12 home win over Abbeyfeale last time out. Bandon are tied on 50 points with Richmond but have won 11 games to the Limerick side’s 10.
Richmond welcome Skibbereen to Richmond Park, with the home side seeking maximum points and a slip up by Bandon will hand the League title to the Limerick side.
Two Tipperary sides are in action against sides battling relegation.
Third-placed Kilfeacle are still in within an outside chance of winning the league title as they host Galbally, who are hovering above the drop zone, five points ahead of Youghal.
Former champions Clonmel, who are fifth, will be expected to maintain their challenge for a top four finish as they host bottom side Cobh Pirates, whose fate is still uncertain as they have two games in hand.
Sixth-placed Waterpark will be looking to claim maximum points from their home tie against Abbeyfeale if they are to keep their slim chances of a top four finish intact.
Kanturk, who are safe in mid-table following their maximum point home win over Skibbereen are at home to struggling Youghal and Clanwilliam welcome St Senan’s to Tipperary Town.
Division 2 leaders Crosshaven travel to Clonakilty, who are fourth with a game in hand. With third-placed Thurles not playing this weekend, the West Cork side will have their work cut out if they are to claim all points on offer and overtake the Tipperary side in third place.
Old Christians, face a tough assignment as they welcome second-placed St Mary’s to Rathcooney.
Ballincollig will be looking to make the most of home advantage count if they are to take another step closer to safety as they welcome Castleisland to Tanner Park.
The two sides who were promoted from Division 3 last season have been battling relegation for most of this season.
Killarney, who are propping up the table, are at home to Muskerry and Mitchelstown are away to Mallow in a North Cork derby.
Elsewhere, Kinsale are at home to Waterford City.
The Division 3 play-off series, to decide which Club will be promoted to Division 2 with champions Charleville, gets underway this weekend.
Fermoy host Tralee at the Showgrounds. The Kerry side recorded a maximum point 26-6 home win when these sixes met on the opening day of the campaign in the Kingdom in October. Both sides have enjoyed recent good runs in knock-out completions and the winners will be away to Fethard in the semi-finals.
Dungarvan and Killorglin, go head to head in West Waterford. Dungarvan recorded a comprehensive victory when they met the Mid Kerry side at the same venue a month ago and the winners will be away to Ennis in the semi-final.
