Junior Rugby Preview

The All Ireland Provincial League series, involving the champions of the four provincial leagues, gets underway this weekend along with several games across various competitions at Junior level this weekend.

Newly-crowned Munster Junior League champions Bandon begin their All Ireland Provincial League campaign with a long trip to North Mayo to take on Connacht champions Ballina.

Shannon welcome Kilfeacle to Coonagh in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup. The winners will have home advantage in the quarter finals against Newcastle West.

Bantry Bay and Bruff go head to head in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Bowl decider at the Paddocks in Cobh.

The Munster Junior Clubs’ Challenge Cup final is down or decision as Clonmel and Waterpark go head to head in Dungarvan. The South Tipperary side are seeking their second title having previously won the trophy in 2015, while the Suirsiders are looking to win the trophy for the first time.

On Friday evening Youghal and Cobh Pirates lock horns in a basement clash in Division 1 of the Junior League at Youghal, with two points separating these sides. The Pirates are propping up the table and their fate is still unclear until the completion of the Ulster Bank All Ireland League round-robin series.

Also on Friday evening Castleisland and Clonakilty meet in the Kingdom in Division 2.

Second-placed Crosshaven are at home to bottom side Killarney on Saturday evening, where a victory would see the South Cork side being crowned champions ahead of St Mary’s and promoted to the top flight with the limerick side.

Mitchelstown are at home to Kinsale and the North Cork side will be looking to make the most of home advantage count if they are to take another step closer to safety and build on their 29-0 victory over Waterford City last time out.

Waterford City are hovering above the drop zone, four points ahead of Mitchelstown and they welcome Old Christians to Suirside.

Thurles put their slim promotion aspirations on the line as they host Ballincollig and Muskerry are at home to Mallow.

The semi-finals of the Munster Junior League Division 3 promotion play-off series are down for decision as Fermoy travel to south Tipperary to take on Fethard. The North Cork side recorded a narrow 21-20 win when these sides met at the Showgrounds a few weeks ago.

In the other semi-final Ennis host Dungarvan. The Clare side ran out 12-3 home winners when these sides met in November.
