Junior Rugby Preview

27th January 2011 By Munster Rugby

This weekend was to be the time that all the big guns made their entry into the Munster Junior Cup, but only half of these sides will be involved as a result of the number of outstanding ties postponed due to the weather.

There are several mouth watering ties in prospect with defending champions U.L. Bohemian going for a third successive title when they travel across Limerick to face Thomond. The last time three in a row was achieved was by Thomond 1989 -1991 and they will be anxious to cause an upset. These sides have met twice already this season with the sides drawing in their first encounter and U.L. won the second game 25-24. There should be little between them at the finish and the holders expected to advance by a narrow margin.

There are three all First Division Munster Junior League clashes involving the three top sides. Leaders Cashel are at home to Crosshaven and having won their league encounter back in November, the Tipperary side have boosted their squad and are presently on a winning streak which is likely to continue.
Second placed Richmond are at home to Cobh Pirates and having had a big win in Cobh in the league, the Limerick side should advance.
Waterpark who are rebuilding this season are at home to St. Senan’s who are struggling at the foot of the table. With their concentration on the league Senan’s are focusing on next week’s bottom of the table clash with Ballincollig and it will be no surprise if Waterpark advance.

Two First Division sides are away to Senior club sides. Clonmel who are beginning to get back to a full strength after a series of injuries face a difficult trip to the Mardyke where they face U.C.C. and the students will be expected to advance.
Likewise last season’s beaten finalists Young Munster should dispose of the challenge of Ballincollig at Tom Clifford Park.

Old Christians are at home to St. Mary’s and after an excellent performance last week away to Cashel, the Rathcooney side should advance to the next round with a meeting against either Cashel or Crosshaven.
Newcastle West will hope to cause one of the shocks of the weekend when they entertain Dolphin. The visitors will have a side with plenty of senior experience and while they will be expected to advance, the home side on their day could upset the odds.

Second Division leaders Galbally are at home to Carrick-on-Suir and the unbeaten County Limerick side should continue their unbeaten run this season with another victory.
Kinsale will hope to reverse last week’s defeat away to Mallow, when the sides meet at Snugmore and home advantage could give Kinsale the edge.
Midleton are at home to Killarney and after a fine performance in the last round the East Cork side will fancy their chances of advancing.
Ennis boosted by last week’s win over Castleisland could make things difficult when Nenagh Ormond visit the Clare venue.

Youghal who have rediscovered their form in recent weeks should continue their good run with a home win over Abbeyfeale.

Scariff who received a walk over from Corca Dhuibhne will now travel to Douglas and the Clare side will make things difficult for the home side.
The other tie sees Dungarvan at home to Kilrush and the West Waterford side should book their place in Round Two.

There is a vital league tie in Division Three in the Munster Junior League with leaders Presentation travelling to Fermoy and the visitors should extend their advantage to at least nine points with a win.
