Junior Rugby Round-Up
8th February 2015 By Munster Rugby
Both Bandon and Charleville won promotion from Divisions 2 and 3 respectively as Kinsale were relegated from Division 1.
Clonmel have extended their lead to five points at the top of Division 1 of the Munster Junior League with just two series of games remaining.
They continued their march towards their first title with a 27-5 away win over Tralee, a result that looks like condemning the Kerry side to Division 2 next season. A try from Mark Corby and a Conor Cooney penalty gave Clonmel an 8-0 half time lead.
Six minutes into the second half the Tipperary side had extended their advantage to 20-0 with tries from Alex Sheehan and Darren Cass and a Cooney conversion. Nessan Crean got a try for Tralee before Cooney secured the bonus point with three minutes remaining with a fourth try which he also converted.
Second placed Newcastle West were pushed all the way by Clonakilty before emerging 22-19 winners. Olan Deane opened the scoring with a try for Clonakilty but Sean Herlihy had the home side level with a try on 18 minutes. Eoin O’Neill restored Clonakilty’s advantage with a second try and Shane Deasy converted, but Stephen Kelly had Newcastle West level at half time with a try which Herlihy converted.
Herlihy kicked a penalty to put the home side in front for the first time but a third try by Courtney Canning which Deasy converted had the visitors 19-12 ahead, Newcastle West finished the stronger with a try from Ronan Mulcahy and Herlihy converted.
St Senan’s took another major step towards a top four finish with a 14-3 home win over Kilfeacle. Fernando Gallant scored a try for Senan’s and Declan Rowe kicked three penalties. Darren Lowry replied with a penalty for Kilfeacle.
Muskerry moved into fourth place with a 22-16 away win over Waterpark and made amends for last week’s Junior Cup defeat. Rob O’Mahony, John Chambers and Stephen Murray scored tries for Muskerry and Pat Rourke kicked a penalty and two conversions. Scott Hornibrook replied with a try for Waterpark and John Lillis kicked a conversion and two penalties.
Kinsale were relegated from Division 1 after their 31-19 defeat by St. Mary’s. This game was in the balance right up to the end of the third quarter with the sides level 19-19 but two unanswered tries by Hugh Moran and Greg Barry and a Sean Lyons conversion meant that Marys denied their visitors anything from this contest.
Darragh Kerley, John Barry were Mary’s other try scorers and they were also awarded a penalty try, two of which Lyons converted. Dan O’Brien, Ian Coughlan and Pat O’Regan scored tries for Kinsale and Barry McGorey and Sean Kingston each kicked a conversion.
Old Christians edged out Cobh Pirates 7-6 in their relegation battle with a try from Niall McCarthy which Sean Meaney converted. Mark Chandler kicked a drop goal and Eoin Geary a penalty for the Pirates but Cobh will regret a few missed long range penalties to win the game.
Galbally eased their relegation worries with a 15-13 away win over Skibbereen. Michael Donovan and Sean Bourke scored tries for Galbally and Bourke kicked a conversion and a penalty. Rory Hone replied with a try for Skibbereen and Denis McCarthy kicked a conversion and two penalties.
Bandon are assured promotion from the Second Division after their 54-5 away win over Castleisland. Richard Walsh was their top scorer with two tries and seven conversions. Sean Óg Murphy (2), Gearoid Crowley, Michael Beecher, Timmy Crowley and Des Prendergast were Bandon’s other try scorers. Sean Nolan replied with a try for ‘Island.
The Clanwilliam v Presentation and Thurles v Crosshaven fixtures were both postponed.
Mallow defeated Ennis 22-15 to remain in fourth place. Denis Murphy scored two tries for the north Cork side and Michael Sweeney and Brian Henry got one each. Kieran Willis kicked one conversion. Jason Considine and Conor Dolan replied with tries for Ennis. Sean Hayes kicked a conversion and Cian Guilfoyle added a drop goal.
Abbeyfeale were impressive 33-0 home winners over Newport. Tom McCarthy scored two tries for Abbeyfeale and Adam Roche and Kieran McCarthy got one each. Cormac Roche kicked three penalties and two conversions.
Ballincollig eased their relegation worries with a 17-8 away win over Killarney. Michael Ward, Ian O’Malley and Padraig Flynn all scored tries for Ballincollig and Richard Dineen kicked a conversion. Alex Mulligan replied with a try for Killarney and Paul O’Sullivan kicked a penalty.
Youghal still remain in relegation trouble after their 40-16 away defeat by Waterford City. Simon O’Hara, Ryan Phillips, Michael Hayes, Dave O’Connor and Kevin Whelan were Waterford’s try scorers and Hayes kicked three penalties and three conversions. Aaron Daly scored a try and a penalty for Youghal and Keith McCarthy kicked two penalties and a conversion.
Charleville clinched promotion from Division Three after they defeated Bantry Bay 17-7. Matt O’Neill and Peadar Cronin scored tries for Charleville and Shane Corkery converted both and also added a penalty. Colin Clancy replied with a try for Bantry which Albert Green converted.
Champions Dungarvan were presented with the Third Division trophy after their 19-15 home win over Fethard. Seamus Keating scored three tries for Dungarvan and David Hickey added two conversions. John Ryan and Tom McGrath replied with tries for Fethard and Richard Carroll kicked a penalty and a conversion.
