Junior Rugby Round-Up

Clonmel and Young Munster advanced to the quarter finals of the Munster Junior Cup as Waterpark ensured their survival in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League.

Holders Clonmel will face St Mary’s in the quarter final of the Munster Junior Cup after their 36-6 home win over Presentation.

The opening half was a very even affair with Conor Cooney putting Clonmel ahead three times with Shane O’Brien levelling twice with penalties for Presentation who trailed 9-6 at half time.

Cooney extended Clonmel’s lead to 19-6 with a penalty and a converted try. Ronan Crosse, Billy O’Kelly and Greg Carroll added further tries to see Clonmel advance.

Young Munster booked their place in the last eight with a 24-12 away win over Waterford City. Kolio Hifo was Munster’s main marksman scoring a try, three conversions and a penalty. Darren Ryan and Mick Madden also scored tries for the visitors. Ryan Phillips and Dave O’Connor replied with tries for Waterford City and Mark Hayes kicked a conversion.

Shannon received a walk over from Old Christians and will now face St. Senan’s in the quarter finals.

Waterpark ensured their status in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League for next season with a 17-15 away win over Clonakilty.

Clonakilty led 10-8 at half time with a try from Batt Duggan and a conversion and penalty by Joe Lee to a try by Ritchie Hally and a John Lillis penalty. Ger McCarthy added a second try for the home side but Lillis replied with three penalties for Waterpark to earn them the points.

Cobh Pirates ran in eleven tries in their 55-5 home win over bottom side Kinsale, but they will now have to wait until the end of the All Ireland League to know if they will be playing in Division 1 or 2 of the league next season. Mark Chandler, Joe Hoyne, Greg Higgins, Eamon Ronan, Jack Hickey, Mick Keating, Peter Ahern, John Kidney, Shane Cullimore and Alan Langton were Cobh’s try scorers. Kieran Keogh replied with a try for Kinsale.

There were five games played in the Munster Junior Plate.

Abbeyfeale defeated Old Crescent 43-25 at Rosbrien. Michael Enright, Alan Roche, Colm O’Sullivan were try scorers for Abbeyfeale who were also awarded a penalty try and Tom Enright kicked four conversions, four penalties and a drop goal. Rory Cunningham replied with two tries for Old Crescent and Conor Hegarty and Stephen Hackett also scored tries, with Hegarty adding a conversion and a penalty.

Muskerry defeated Charleville 40-12 with tries from John Chambers, Dave Hennessy, Mark Jones, Aidan Murray, Liam Donovan and Conor Buckley. Pat Rourke converted five of the tries. Shane Corkery replied with four penalties for Charleville.

Skibbereen advanced to the next round with a 48-10 home win over Dolphin. Denis O’Driscoll (3), Vinny White, David Shannon, Ger Hurley, Ritchie Byrne and Kevin Coombes were Skibbereen’s try scorers. Hurley kicked three conversions and Coombes one. James Murphy and Jack Ingles replied with tries for Dolphin.

Thurles defeated Richmond 36-16 at Richmond Park. Eoghan O’Dwyer scored three tries for the Tipperary side and Aidan Burke, Nicky Irwin and Aidan Dwyer got one each. Eoghan Dwyer kicked three conversions. Finbarr Hogan and Alex Simpson replied with tries for Richmond and Brian O’Neill kicked two penalties.

Nenagh Ormond defeated Galbally 15-10. Mareks Gribs, Willie Coffey and Brian Williams scored tries for Nenagh and Michael Donovan and Tom Davern replied with tries for Galbally.

Cobh Pirates defeated Carrick-on-Suir 21-13 in the Junior Two Cup South. Glen O’Sullivan and Jack Barrett scored tries for Cobh and Adam Devlin kicked three penalties and a conversion.
