Junior Rugby Round-Up

Plenty of drama in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League, as leaders Clonmel lost for the first time and Newcastle West are the new leaders.

Newcastle West have moved into top spot in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League after their hard earned 27-20 home win over bottom side Kinsale. This was Kinsale’s best performance of the season and they were unlucky to be only going home with one bonus point.

Alan Roche opened the scoring with a penalty for Newcastle West but Kinsale hit back with a try from Pat O’Regan which Sean Kingston converted. Tries from James Kelly and John Sheehan and a Roche conversion had the home side 15-7 ahead at the interval.

A penalty and a conversion of an O’Regan try by Kingston had the sides level after forty seven minutes.

Tommy Kelleher and Richard Langford scored tries for Newcastle West and Roche kicked a conversion for a 27-15 lead. O’Regan scored a third try ten minutes from time for Kinsale but the home side held out for a win to go top with just four games remaining.

Clonmel’s lead at the top only lasted a week after their great win last week over Newcastle West as St. Senan’s defeated them 19-13 at Jim Slattery Park.

Clonmel raced into an 8-0 lead with a try from Mick Barry and a penalty from Conor Cooney. Warren Kelly and Ian Fitzgerald replied with tries for the home side and Declan Rowe kicked a conversion. A try by Cooney on the stroke of half-time had Clonmel 13-12 ahead.

Four minutes into the second half Emile Maffat scored a try for Senan’s and Rowe converted to put the Clare side into the third place.

Skibbereen won their west Cork derby with Clonakilty on a 32-5 scoreline. Skibb led 20-0 at half-time with tries from Declan Coppinger, David Shannon and Kieran Shannon and a conversion and a penalty from Ger Hurley. Rory Hone and David Shannon added further tries and Hurley kicked a conversion. Courtney Canning replied with a try for Clonakilty.

Kilfeacle have moved into fourth place after their 27-20 away win over Waterpark. JJ Cooney, Keith Bourke and Diarmuid O’Donnell were the Kilfeacle try scorers and Darren Lowery kicked three conversions and two penalties. Greg Miller and Rory Hannon replied with tries for Waterpark and John Lillis added two conversions and two penalties.

Muskerry kept their hopes alive of a top four finish with a 14-8 away win over Galbally. A try by Michael O’Donovan to a Jonathan Buckley penalty had Galbally leading 5-3 at half time. A try from Dave Hennessy and two penalties from Buckley secured the points for the mid-Cork side. Galbally’s only reply was a penalty by Sean Bourke.

Old Christians were stunned at Rathcooney as Tralee won their second game of the season with a 20-12 win. Jamie Byrne, Dan O’Connor and Nessan Crean scored tries for the Kerry side and Mike Mullally kicked a conversion and a penalty. Dave O’Driscoll and Darragh Daly replied with tries for Old Christians and Sean Meaney added a conversion.

A last minute try from Tom Rice earned Cobh Pirates a share of the spoils at Grove Island when they played out a 16-16 draw with St. Mary’s. Greg Higgins kicked three penalties and a conversion for the Pirates. Darragh Kerley was Mary’s try scorer and Sean Lyons kicked a conversion and three penalties.

Bandon maintained their unbeaten run in Division Two with a 30-0 away win over Ennis. Conor Pullitt, Colin Jackson and Kevin Brophy scored tries for Bandon and Richard Walsh converted all three tries and also added three penalties.

Clanwilliam defeated Newport 36-6 in a game that also doubled up as a Munster Junior Cup tie. Bryan O’Rahelly scored three tries for the winners, Darragh Crowe got two and Pauric Ryan one were Clan’s try scorers. Niall Leahy kicked two conversions and Dave Kinehan one. Philip O’Brien replied with two penalties for Newport.

Thurles kept their challenge on track with an 8-0 win over Presentation. Donnacha Duggan scored a try for Thurles and Aidan Dwyer added a penalty.

Ballincollig eased their relegation worries with a surprising 14-6 away win over Castleisland. Michael Ward scored a try for the winners and Richard Dineen kicked three penalties. Dan O’Shea replied with two penalties.

Abbeyfeale added to Killarney’s relegation worries with a 24-0 home win. John Browne, Philip Collins and Michael Enright were Abbeyfeale’s try scorers. David Collins kicked two conversions and a penalty and Philip Collins kicked one conversion.

Youghal and Mallow played out a 6-6 draw. Keith McCarthy kicked two penalties for Youghal and Michael O’Flynn replied with two penalties for Mallow.
