Junior Rugby Round-Up

Clonmel remain on course for the grand slam of the three major competitions in Munster Junior rugby after they defeated St. Mary’s in the Munster Junior Cup quarter final at Clonmel.

The semi final line up is now complete for the Munster Junior Cup following home victories for Clonmel and Young Munster. Clonmel served notice that they would not be giving up their Munster Junior Cup title without a fight after seeing off the challenge of St. Mary’s 34-10.

Penalties from Conor Cooney on 14, 16 and 26 minutes had Clonmel 9-0 ahead before Greg Barry opened the Saints account with a penalty eight minutes before the break. Clonmel’s response was quick as tries from John Gallagher and Darren Cass and a Cooney conversion had Clonmel 21-3 ahead at half time.

Cooney extended their advantage with a penalty two minutes into the second half. Mary’s were awarded a penalty try on fifty minutes and Barry converted. Cooney kicked his fifth penalty five minutes from time and Brendan Lawlor followed up with Clonmel’s third try which Cooney converted.

Young Munster will be away to Clonmel in the semi final after their 32-13 hard earned victory over Highfield at Tom Clifford Park. A try from Diarmaid McCarthy and an Alan Wallace penalty had the home side 8-0 in front after eight minutes.

John Sheehan opened Highfield’s account with a penalty but Cian Clohessy extended Munster’s advantage with a try five minutes before the interval. George French reduced the gap with a try for Highfield on the stroke of half time to leave it 13-8. Marc Murphy brought Highfield level with a try twelve minutes into the second half.

However in the final eight minutes Munsters ran in tries from Gary Fitzgerald, Evan Mulcahy and Barry Gibbons and Kolio Hifo converted two of them to book their place in the last four.

Nenagh Ormond will face Skibbereen at home in next week’s semi final of the Munster Junior Plate after both sides won their quarter final ties.

A last minute try earned Nenagh Ormond a 15-10 home win over Abbeyfeale in their quarter final tie. Darren Hassey and Gerard O’Gorman scored tries for the Tipperary side and Michael Walsh kicked a conversion and a penalty. Kieran McCarthy replied with a try for Abbeyfeale and Tom Hassett kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Skibbereen booked their place in the semi finals with a comfortable 38-5 home win over Muskerry. They led 24-0 at half time with wing forward Greg O’Mahony scoring three of their six tries. Alex Maseesee got two and Darragh O’Mahony one. Ger Hurley converted four of the tries and John Chambers replied with a try for Muskerry.

Ennis will face Sunday’s Well in the final of the Munster Junior Bowl after their 24-22 home win over U.C.C. Sean Hayes and Conor Dolan scored tries for Ennis and Hayes kicked four penalties and a conversion. Dan Healy, Gerry Ryan and Mikey Fielding replied with tries for College and Cillian Monaghan kicked a penalty and two conversions.

Charleville will face Bandon in the final of the O’Neill Cup after they defeated Youghal 11-7 at the east Cork venue. A try by Darragh Browne and two penalties by Shane Corkery gave the north Cork side an 11-0 half time lead. Keith McCarthy replied with a try and a conversion for the home side.

Waterford City caused an upset in the Mansergh Cup with a 14-7 away win over Kilfeacle. Ryan Philips scored a try for Waterford and Michael Hayes kicked three penalties. Brian McLoughlin replied with a try for Kilfeacle and John Hogan converted.

Galbally defeated Thurles 16-13 in the Garryowen Cup. Gordon Peters was Galbally’s try scorer and Sean Bourke kicked a conversion, drop goal and two penalties. Eoghan O’Dwyer replied with two tries and a penalty for Thurles.

Highfield progressed to the quarter finals of the Junior 2 Cup South with a 29-13 home win over Mitchelstown. Darren Walsh scored two tries for the winners and Cian Mahony, Donal Moriarty and Neal Griffin got one each. Dave Eustace kicked two penalties.
