Junior Rugby Round-Up

Clonmel extended their lead at the top of Division 1 of the Munster Junior League as some of their main challengers faltered.

Clonmel defeated Clonakilty at the west Cork venue 22-5. Tries from Tony Cantwell and Greg Carroll and a Dylan Cadogan conversion gave Clonmel a 12-0 half time lead. Dean Slattery and Robbie Carroll added further tries to secure the bonus point. Shane Scannell scored a late try for the home side.

Newcastle West moved up to second place with a 29-10 home win over bottom side Old Christians.
John Marnell kicked a penalty to give Old Christians an early lead. Three penalties from Sean Herlihy and a conversion of a Niall Kennedy try gave the home side a 16-3 half time lead.
Old Christians closed the gap with a try from Cian Smith which Marnell converted.
Two further penalties from Herlihy and a conversion of a Timmy Kelliher secured the points for the west Limerick outfit.

Clanwilliam, who were second, lost ground when a late penalty try denied them victory at Galbally, 25-19.
Paul Ryan, Darragh Burke and Kieran O’Donnell scored tries for the Tipperary Town based side and Niall Leahy added two conversions.

Cobh Pirates defeated St. Senan’s 34-18 in a thrilling eight try game at Cobh. Cobh raced into an early 10-0 lead with a try from PJ McSweeney and a conversion and a penalty by Alan Langford. Martin Corbett opened the Clare’s side account with a try which Declan Rowe converted. A Langford penalty left it 13-7 at half time.
Three minutes into the second half MJ McDonogh scored a try for Senan’s and Rowe’s conversion had them 14-13 in front. Cobh rallied and tries by Shane Cudmore and Stephen Hickey, both of which Langford converted made it 27-14. A try by Tommy Conlon converted by Rowe was cancelled out by a fourth Cobh try from Ian O’Donovan which Eamon Ronan converted. A fourth Senan’s try by Tom Cronin converted by Rowe saw the Clare side pick up two points from this encounter.

A last minute try by Gearoid O’Leary converted by Sean Óg Murphy earned Bandon a narrow 7-3 win at Ballyanly against Muskerry. Ciaran O’Connor gave Muskerry the lead with a first half penalty.

Kilfeacle lost at home to Richmond 21-14. Tries from Charles Walsh and Diarmuid McCarthy both converted by Shane Looby gave Kilfeacle a 14-12 half time lead. Brian Mullins kicked seven penalties for the visitors.

Skibbereen eased their relegation worries with a 27-26 home win over Abbeyfeale. Tom Bushe, Peter Stout and Declan Collins scored tries for Skibbereen and Denis McCarthy converted all three and added two penalties. Abbeyfeale secured two points from this game with tries from Tom Hassett, Michael Roche (2) and John Murphy. Hassett kicked three conversions.

All the top five sides in Division Two had bonus point victories.

Waterpark and Youghal are level on points but Waterpark are the leaders on points’ difference. Waterpark defeated Tralee at the Kerry venue 51-10. Dave O’Donoghue and Paddy Kiersey each scored two tries for Waterpark and Vinny Molloy, Scott Hornibrook, John O’Brien, Ivan Kiersey and Alex Molloy got one each. O’Brien kicked three conversions. Michael Maher was Tralee’s try scorer and Jack Quilter converted. Darragh O’Neill kicked a penalty.

The two promoted sides from Division 3 met in a top of the table clash and victory went to Youghal as the home side defeated Crosshaven 38-16. Alan Frahill O’Connor scored two tries for the winners and Dean Malone, Conor Lane, Stephen Kelly and Brendan Mackey got one each. Keith McCarthy kicked four conversions.
Michael Lynch and Shane Bushe replied with tries for Crosshaven and Ian Smith kicked two penalties.

Thurles defeated Ennis 46-12 to remain in third place four points behind the leaders. Tommy Stevens and Adrian Burke each scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Mark Cummins, Eoin O’Dwyer, Shane Moloney and Peter Coman got one each. O’Dwyer kicked three conversions. Bryan Murphy replied with four penalties for Ennis.

Waterford City defeated Presentation 51-13. Darren Walsh, Joe Delahunty, Conor Power, John Harte, Michael Hayes, Jason Power, Liam Hayes and Jack Caffrey scored tries for Waterford. Hayes kicked four conversions and a penalty. Craig Airey replied with two tries and a penalty for Presentation.

St. Mary’s defeated Ballincollig 29-14 with two tries from Brian Purcell. Greg Barry and Tommy Galvin got a try each. Adam Guerin kicked three conversions and a penalty. Kevin Ryan scored a try for Ballincollig and they were also awarded a penalty try. Charlie Boland converted both.

Kinsale eased their relegation worries with a 14-9 away win at Mallow. Sean Kingston scored Kinsale’s try and Timmy Broderick kicked three penalties. Jimmy Glynn replied with three penalties for Mallow.

A first half penalty from Michael O’Flynn was not enough for Charleville who lost 6-3 away to Castleisland. Willie Casey and Dan O’Shea each kicked second half drop goals for the Kerry side.

Killorglin extended their lead at the top of Division 3 with a 9-8 win at Fermoy in their top of the table clash.
Emmet Sweeney scored a try and a Dylan Lacey penalty gave Fermoy an 8-3 half time lead, but the home side failed to add to their tally despite having wind advantage after the break.
Luke O’Shea kicked three penalties for the Kerry side.

Mitchelstown maintained their challenge with a 25-19 home win over Killarney to move into second place.
David Sheehan, Fionn Herlihy and John Evans were Mitchelstown’s try scorers and Patrick McGee kicked two penalties and two conversions.
Ger Moynihan replied with a try for Killarney and Paudie Sheehan kicked a conversion and four penalties.

Chorca Dhuibhne defeated Dungarvan 55-20. Ciaran Collins scored four tries for the winners, Eanna O’Connor got two tries and Shane Griffin and Seamus Murphy got one each. Griffin kicked six conversions and a penalty.
Martin Houlihan replied with two tries for Dungarvan and Declan Fennell and Sean Cunningham got one apiece.

A Sean O’Shea penalty was not enough for Bantry Bay who lost away to Douglas-Carrigaline 36-3.

Cobh Pirates defeated Mallow 35-10 in the Junior 2 League South. Stephen O’Neill scored two tries for Cobh and Declan Blake, Glen O’Sullivan and Will Ireland got a try each. Ian Jones kicked five conversions.
