Junior Rugby Round-Up
11th December 2016 By Munster Rugby
Senior clubs proved too strong for the Division Three clubs in the opening round of the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup as Kinsale and Thurles will contest the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Shield final.
Division 3 league leaders Killorglin lost for the first time this season when they were defeated at home by Midleton, 24-13. Ryan Hogan and Michael Cronin scored tries for Midleton and Jamie Clohessy kicked four penalties and a conversion. Killorglin replied with a try from Kieran Crowley and Luke O’Shea converted and also added two penalties.
Kanturk had to withstand a late rally from Dungarvan before emerging 22-17 winners. Dungarvan took an early lead with a penalty but tries from Killian Buttimer and Keelan Buckley gave the visitors a 10-3 half time lead.
Tries from Olan Daly and Buttimer, the latter converted by Daly extended Kanturk’s lead to 22-3 before two late converted tries closed the gap to five points.
Bruff defeated Killarney 20-10. The visitors led 15-0 at half time and James Allman and Paudie Sheahan scored second half tries for Killarney.
In the all Third Division clash at Moneygourney, Douglas-Carrigaline defeated Fethard 20-5. The home side led 7-5 at half time and had tries from Ben Atkins and David McCarthy with Padraig McSweeney converting both and also adding two penalties.
Waterpark suffered their first defeat of the season when Thurles defeated them 17-11 in the semi final of the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield at the Tipperary venue. Waterpark led 6-0 at half time thanks to two penalties from Alex Molloy. With two players in the sin bin, Thurles took full advantage of their numerical strength and Peter Coman scored two tries. Thurles were then awarded a penalty try which John Lillis converted. Waterpark rallied in the closing stages but their only reward was a try from Dave Lattimer.
Kinsale proved too strong for Charleville in the other semi final which they won 39-6. Aidan Clarke scored two tries for the winners and Joe Lynch, Ian Coleman and Sam Bergerson also scored tries. Sean Kingston kicked four conversions and two penalties. Jack Doyle replied with two penalties for Charleville.
A try from Paul Clifford was not enough for Iveragh who lost 51-5 at home to Castleisland in the McElligott Cup.
