Junior Rugby Round-Up

Newcastle West and Bandon extend their leads at the top of Division 1 & 2 of the Munster Junior League.

Newcastle West travelled to Shannon and defeated St. Senan’s 36-16 to extend their lead at the top of Division 1 to two points. The visitors led 14-6 at half time with tries from Dave Foley and Gavin O’Donnell and two conversions by Sean Herlihy. Declan Rowe kicked two penalties for Senan’s. Two tries from Sean Neville and one each from Stephen Kelly and Tom Kelleher and a Herlihy conversion saw the visitors take the spoils. Fernando Gallant replied with a try for Senan’s and Rowe converted.

Clonmel and Muskerry the two other unbeaten sides in the top flight met at the Tipperary venue where Clonmel ran out 15-3 winners. All the scoring came in the opening half. A try, conversion and a penalty from Conor Cooney had Clonmel 10-0 ahead after 25 minutes. Jonathan Buckley kicked a penalty for the visitors before Neville Melbourne got in for a second Clonmel try on the stroke of half-time.

Cobh Pirates recorded their first win of the season when they defeated Galbally 20-12 in a game that also doubled up as Junior Clubs Challenge Cup tie. Joe Hoyne and Greg Higgins scored tries for Cobh and Eoin Geary converted both and also added two penalties. Kevin Casey and Brendan Childs scored tries for Galbally and Tommy Childs kicked a conversion.

Old Christians have moved into fourth place after their 19-15 home win over Kilfeacle. Tries from Stephen Twohig and Sean Murnane both converted by Sean Meaney had the Rathcooney side 14-10 ahead at half-time. Josh Featherstone scored Kilfeacle’s try and Darren Lowry converted and also added a penalty. In the second half each side scored a try, Darragh Daly for Christians and Michael Shanahan for the visitors.

St Mary’s eased their relegation worries with a 20-10 home win over Waterpark. A Stuart Lipper try and a conversion and penalty from Sean Lyons gave Mary’s a 10-0 half time lead. Scott Hornibrook replied with a try for Waterpark and Kieran Butler kicked a conversion and a penalty to level the scores before Devlin Price put the home side back in front with a try which Lyons converted and the out-half then kicked a penalty to deny Waterpark a losing bonus point.

The game between Kinsale and Clonakilty was called off as a mark of respect to Noel O’Sullivan a Clonakilty stalwart who died unexpectedly on Saturday and the Tralee v Skibbereen tie was also postponed.

Bandon extended their advantage at the top of Division 2 following their 33-16 home win over Abbeyfeale. Kevin Brophy, Sean Óg Murphy, Des Prendergast, Aidan Slattery and Conor Pullan scored tries for Bandon and Richard Walsh kicked two penalties and a conversion. Robert Browne replied with a try for the visitors and Tom Hassett kicked a conversion and three penalties.

Two of the other unbeaten sides in this division met at Castleisland, where the home side defeated Thurles 29-21. Gary Downey, Mike Cronin and Kieran Downey scored tries for the Kerry side and Connie Reynolds added a conversion and four penalties. Peter Coman and Aidan Dwyer were try scorers for Thurles and Eoghan O’Dwyer kicked three penalties and a conversion.

Clanwilliam kept up their challenge with a 22-0 home win over Ennis. Pauric Ryan, Kieran Merrigan and Ian O’Rahelly were try scorers for the Tipperary side and Niall Leahy kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Mallow continued their recent good run with a 37-13 win over Ballincollig at Tanner Park. A try from Ed Healy and a conversion and a penalty by Michael O’Flynn had Mallow 10-6 ahead at half time, Denis Galvin kicked two penalties for the home side. Luke O’Brien, Conor O’Donovan and O’Flynn added tries after the interval and O’Flynn converted all three and kicked two penalties. Ballincollig were awarded a penalty try which Galvin converted.

Newport eased their relegation worries with a 25-8 bonus point home win over Youghal. Aidan Ryan scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Ray Ryan and Declan Kett got one each. Philip O’Brien kicked a conversion and a penalty. Youghal replied with a try from Killian Daly and a penalty by Adam Malone.

Waterford City moved off the bottom of the table with a 17-3 away win over Killarney. Ryan Phillips, Simon O’Hara and Jason Power were Waterford’s try scorers and Darren Walsh converted one of the tries. Mike Sheahan replied with a penalty for Killarney.

Presentation received a walk over from Crosshaven.

Dungarvan defeated Scariff 11-3 to remain unbeaten in the Third Division with a try from Martin Houlihan and two David Hickey penalties. Conor Moloney replied for the home side with a penalty.

A try from Dalius Pogozelskis and a conversion and a penalty from Eoin Philpott helped Douglas to a 10-5 away win over Fethard.

Fermoy defeated Bantry Bay 13-3. A try from Peter Skuse and a conversion and a penalty from Dylan Lacey had Fermoy 10-3 ahead at half time. Sean O’Shea replied with a penalty for the visitors. A second penalty from Lacey in the second half kept Fermoy’s promotion hopes alive.

The Carrigaline v Charleville tie was also postponed due to the weather.
