Junior Rugby Round-Up

After two series of games, Clonmel and Youghal are the early pacesetters in both Division 1 and Division 2 of the Munster Junior League.
Clonmel scored seven tries in their 48-7 away win over Old Christians. The visitors led 10-0 at half-time with a try from Greg Carroll and a conversion and penalty by Conor Cooney. Further tries by Greg Carroll, Robbie Carroll, Dylan Cadogan, Gareth Mulcahy, Dave O’Gorman and Neville Melbourne and four conversions by Cooney completed the scoring for the defending champions. Liam Purdy replied with a try for the home side and John Marnell converted.
St Senan’s are in second place following their 14-10 home win over Muskerry. A try from Daniel Horgan which Eoin Keohane converted gave Muskerry a 7-0 lead. The Clare side were level by half-time with a try by Fergal Lawlor which Declan Rowe converted. Senan’s went ahead with a try by Dale O’Loughlin and Rowe again converted. Muskerry’s only response was a penalty from Keohane. This game also doubled up as a Junior Clubs Challenge Cup game.
Cobh Pirates have moved into third place after their 22-12 bonus point home win over Skibbereen. Two tries from Alan Langford and one each by Ian O’Donovan and Shane Cullimore secured the win as Langford added one conversion. Declan Coppinger and Tom Bushe replied with tries for Skibb’ and Denis McCarthy kicked a conversion.
Bandon defeated Richmond 6-5 in a game that was played under lights at Old Chapel on Saturday evening. Two first-half penalties from Sean Óg Murphy gave Bandon a 6-0 interval lead. Gareth O’Hanlon was Richmond’s try scorer.
Clanwilliam came from 10-0 down to win the Tipperary derby defeating Kilfeacle 14-10. Darren Burke was Clanwilliam’s try scorer and Niall Leahy added two penalties and a drop goal. Diarmuid O’Donnell gave Kilfeacle an early lead with a try and Shane Looby converted and added a penalty.
Newcastle West defeated Galbally 9-3. Michael O’Leary kicked two penalties for the west Limerick side who led 6-3 at half-time. Liam Casey kicked a penalty for the visitors. A leg injury to Dave Foley held up the game and when it did resume Sean Herlihy kicked a third penalty for Newcastle West to seal the win.
Abbeyfeale edged out Clonakilty 13-8. Eoin Deasy gave Clonakilty a 5-0 half-time lead. Abbeyfeale hit back with a penalty try and a five-pointer from Eoin McEnery along with a penalty by Steve Daly to lead 13-5.
A penalty late in the game from Deasy secured Clonakilty a losing bonus point.
Youghal are the only side with maximum points in Division Two after their 32-13 away win over Tralee. A try from Anthony Frahill O’Connor and a penalty try which Keith McCarthy converted gave Youghal a 12-3 half-time lead. Darragh O’Neill kicked a penalty for the home side. McCarthy and Aaron Daly added second half tries and McCarthy converted both and also added two penalties. Jamie Lynch had a try for Tralee and O’Neill converted and also added a penalty.
Waterpark edged out Thurles 15-7. Tries from David O’Donoghue and Geoff Tower and a conversion and a penalty by James Kiersey gave Waterpark a 15-0 half-time lead. Waterford City defeated Mallow 11-6 with a try from Darren Walsh and two penalties by Michael Hayes.
Jimmy Glynn kicked two penalties for the home side.
St Mary’s made it two wins from two after their 20-8 away win over Kinsale. Mary’s had a try from Darragh Fitzgerald and were also awarded a penalty try. Sean Lyons converted both and also added two penalties. Timmy Broderick scored a try for Kinsale and Cian O’Brien kicked a penalty.
A last minute conversion by Craig Airey of a Ger Clancy try gave Presentation a 17-16 win over Castleisland at Rathuard. Stephen Ryan also scored a try for the Limerick side and Airey converted and also added a penalty. Willie Nolan and Mike Cronin replied with tries for Castleisland and Willie Casey kicked two penalties.
Crosshaven had a 16-15 away win over Ballincollig. Eric Marron was Crosshaven’s try scorer and Ian Smith kicked a conversion and three penalties. Mike Ward and Mick O’Shea replied with tries for Ballincollig and Charlie Boland kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Ennis had a 14-10 home win over Charleville. Damien Forde scored a try for the Clare side and Shane Galvin kicked three penalties. Michael Flynn converted a penalty try and also added a penalty for Charleville.
Mitchelstown made a winning start in their first game in Division Three with a 22-0 away win over Bantry Bay. A try from Jack Norris and a conversion and a penalty by Patrick Molloy gave the visitors a 10-0 half-time lead. Norris and Patrick McGee added further tries after the break and Molloy kicked a conversion.
Killorglin defeated Fethard 21-14. The Kerry side led 10-0 at half-time. Brian Hayes and Geoff Evans scored tries for the home side and Luke O’Shea kicked three penalties and a conversion. Fethard replied with a try from Connie Coen and Gary Kavanagh kicked three penalties.
Douglas-Carrigaline defeated Chorca Dhuibhne 31-18 at Moneygourney. Alan Devine scored two tries for the Kerry Gaeltacht side and Seamus Moriarty kicked two penalties and a conversion.
In the other game Dungarvan were 11-6 home winners over Killarney.
In the Junior 2 League South, Iveragh opened their campaign with a 22-17 home win over Muskerry.
Barry O’Shea, Odhran O’Mahony and Darren Houlihan scored tries for the Cahirciveen side. Brian O’Leary kicked two conversions and a penalty.
