Junior Rugby Round-Up

A bonus point win for Newcastle West sees them top the First Division of the Munster Junior League

With Clonmel failing to collect a bonus point at Clonakilty, Newcastle West went top of the table after their 30-10 home win over Old Christians. A try from James Kelly and a Sean Herlihy penalty gave Newcastle West an 8-3 interval lead. James Kelly, Stephen Kelly and Sean Neville scored second half tries and Herlihy kicked two conversions and a penalty. Stephen Twohig scored a try for Old Christians and Sean Meany kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Clonmel made it three wins from three when they beat Clonakilty 24-13 at The Vale. Joe Lee opened the scoring with a penalty for the home side after fifteen minutes but Conor Cooney levelled with a penalty for the Tipperary side. Lee restored Clonakilty’s advantage with his second penalty but this was again cancelled out by a second Cooney penalty.
The game was decided just before half time when Ronan Cross and Neville Melbourne scored tries for Clonmel and Cooney converted the first for an 18-6 half time lead.
Scot Sheehan scored a try early in the second half for Clonakilty which Lee converted but two penalties from Cooney saw Clonmel take the spoils.

Muskerry picked up their first bonus point win with a 22-13 home victory over Cobh Pirates to stay a point behind the leaders. The home side led 12-10 at half time with tries from John Chambers and Pat Rourke. Jonathan Buckley converted. Mick Keating replied with a try for Cobh which Eoin Geary converted. Geary also added a penalty. Further tries by Joe Tracey and Christopher Campbell secured the bonus point for Muskerry and Cobh’s only response was a second penalty from Geary.

There were first wins of the campaign for both Skibbereen and Tralee. Skibbereen defeated St. Mary’s 20-7. Rory Hoyne scored two tries for the winners and Cillian Keegan crossed for one. Ger Hurley kicked a conversion and a penalty. Jamie Lynch replied with a try for the Limerick side which Sean Lyons converted.

A try from Jamie Byrne and two Ciaran Crowley penalties earned Tralee an 11-6 away win over Galbally. Sean Bourke kicked two penalties for the home side.

Kilfeacle ran in nine tries in their 60-19 home win over Kinsale. Michael Shanahan, JJ Cooney, Darren Lowry, Conor Hartigan, Dermot Carr, Keith Bourke, Wallace Bourke, Ger Looby and Diarmuid O’Donnell all scored tries for the Tipperary side and Lowry kicked six conversions and one penalty. Peter Murphy, Ashley Black and Shane O’Dwyer replied with tries for Kinsale with Murphy adding two conversions.

In Division Two both Bandon and Castleisland recorded bonus point wins as Clanwilliam and Thurles kept pace with the leaders.

Castleisland travelled to Ennis and defeated the home side 29-22. Kieran Downey, Shane O’Connell, Connie Reynolds and Gary Downey scored tries for the Kerry side and Reynolds added three conversions and a penalty.

Bandon had a 58-3 home win over Presentation. Gearoid Crowley scored four tries for the winners, Conor Pullan three, Tom Ferguson and Richie Walsh one each. Walsh kicked five conversions and a penalty. Craig Phayer replied with a penalty for the visitors.

Clanwilliam had a narrow 11-7 away win over Waterford City. Gavin Hickey scored a try for the winners and Brian Kissane and Niall Leahy each added a penalty. Ryan Phillips scored a try for Waterford and Darren Walsh converted.

Thurles defeated Abbeyfeale 24-3 with tries from Nicky Irwin, John Coman, Larry O’Gorman and Donnacha Duggan. Eoghan O’Dwyer kicked two conversions and Tom Hassett replied with a penalty for the visitors.

Mallow had a 49-19 bonus point win at home to Newport. Conor O’Donovan, Luke O’Brien and Mike Flynn scored two tries each for the winners and Cian Nagle also crossed for one. Flynn converted all seven tries. John Sullivan, Liam Griffin and Andrew O’Reilly replied with tries for the Tipperary side and Fionn O’Shea kicked two conversions.

Two tries from Paudge Flynn and Rob Foulkes and one by Dave Power gave Ballincollig a 32-14 away win over Crosshaven. Kevin Doyle kicked two conversions and a penalty. Jordan Fahy had a try for Crosshaven and they were also awarded a penalty try with George Jagoe converting both.

Youghal defeated Killarney 24-19 with tries from Dean Malone, Brendan Mackey and James Frahill-O’Connor. Adam Malone converted all three tries and also kicked a penalty. Brian O’Sullivan and Paul Moynihan scored tries for the visitors.

In the Third Division Dungarvan ran in six tries in their 38-17 home win over Fermoy. Dungarvan led 31-0 at half time and had two tries each from David Hickey and Anthony O’Connor. Martin Houlihan and Maurice Walsh also scored tries for the winners and Hickey converted four of the tries. Fermoy replied with tries from Ian Pratt, John McCarthy and Eddie O’Connell. Dylan Lacey kicked one conversion.

Douglas had an 18-13 home win over Charleville. James Flynn scored a try for Charleville and Shane Corkery kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Scariff edged out Carrigaline 17-15. Robbie Madden and Conor McNamara scored tries for the Clare side and McNamara converted both, also adding a penalty. Jonathan Cooke, John Tait and Gary Murphy replied with tries for Carrigaline.

Bantry Bay picked up their first points with a 20-19 home win over Killorglin. Padraig O’Driscoll and Sean O’Shea were try scorers for Bantry. Albert Green kicked two penalties and a conversion, with O’Shea also adding a conversion.
