Junior Rugby Round-Up

Holders Clonmel had to withstand a late Young Munster challenge before booking their place in next Sunday’s Munster Junior Cup final against Shannon at Thomond Park

Clonmel remain on course to retain their Munster Junior Cup title after a 25-22 home win over Young Munster.

Darragh Foley put Clonmel ahead with a try after seven minutes and a try by Ronan Crosse converted by Conor Cooney made it 12-0 after 30 minutes.

Eight minutes into the second half David O’Mahony opened Young Munster’s account with a penalty.
Tries by Foley and Brian Condon (below) had Clonmel 22-3 ahead after seventy minutes.""

Barry Gibbons scored a try for Young Munster and O’Mahony converted and a try by O’Mahony left seven points between the sides with five minutes remaining.

Cooney kicked a penalty for Clonmel on 78 minutes but Gavin Ryan had Munsters third try in injury time and O’Mahony converted.

Skibbereen will face Clonakilty in the Cork County Cup Final after their 18-13 away win over Old Christians at Rathcooney.

The home side led 10-9 at half time with a try from Paddy Naughton and a conversion and penalty by Sean Meaney. Ger Hurley replied with three penalties for Skibbereen.

Hurley kicked three further penalties in the second half and the home side’s only reply was a penalty by Meaney.

Thomond (above) defeated Shannon 12-9 to lift the Webb Cup. Darragh O’Doherty kicked two penalties to give Shannon a 6-0 half-time lead. A try by Pat Deedigan converted by Thomas O’Riordan put Thomond ahead for the first time.

O’Doherty restored Shannon’s advantage with his third penalty but a try by Ciaran Mooney earned Thomond victory.

Kilfeacle defeated St. Mary’s 17-11 in the Carroll Plate Final. Tries by Pierce Breen and Josh Featherstone both converted by Mark Bourke and a Bourke penalty were Kilfeacle’s scorers. Des Fitzgerald replied with a try for Mary’s and Stephen Wyse kicked two penalties.

Highfield remain on course for a South Munster Junior 2 double after they defeated Bandon 15-12 at Wilton in the Cup semi final.

A try and a conversion by Olan Crowley gave Bandon the lead but a try by Derek Houlihan left it 7-5 to Bandon at half time.

Gearoid O’Leary scored a second half try for Bandon but Highfield hit back with a penalty, try and conversion by Dave Eustace to earn them a place in the final against Cobh Pirates next Friday evening at Irish Independent Park.
