Junior Rugby Round-Up

The destination of the Division 1 and 2 Munster Junior League titles will have to wait for another day after the weather saw Clonmel’s game being postponed and Clanwilliam defeated Bandon in the big game in Division Two.

The meeting of the top two unbeaten sides in Division 2 of the Munster Junior League saw leaders Bandon lose at home to Clanwilliam 17-3. Bandon had wind advantage in the opening half but, the sides were level 3-3 at the interval.

Sean Óg Murphy put Bandon ahead with a penalty and Andrew Ryan replied for the Tipperary side. Two tries from Alan Bennie both converted by Niall Leahy sees Clanwilliam close the gap at the top to seven points.

All the other games played affected the relegation battle.

Presentation defeated Killarney 42-5, a result that will see Killarney relegated to the Third Division next season. Shane O’Brien scored a try, penalty and two conversions for the Limerick side and Gareth Airey, Alan Airey, Darren Guerin, Dave Clancy, Gerard Clancy and Eoin Lynch also scored tries. Brian O’Sullivan replied with a try for the Kerry side.

In the First Division, with leaders Clonmel’s game with Cobh Pirates postponed because of the weather, Newcastle West have closed the gap to a point after their 18-7 away win over Muskerry.

A try from Joe Treacy converted by Pat Rourke gave Muskerry a 7-3 interval lead. Sean Herlihy kicked a penalty for the visitors. Tries from James Kelly and Ronan Mulcahy and a conversion and a penalty by Herlihy saw Newcastle West keep their challenge alive.

St. Senan’s moved closer to a top four finish after their 6-5 away win at Clonakilty. Declan Rowe kicked two first half penalties to give Senan’s a 6-0 half time lead. Despite the advantage of the wind, Clonakilty could only muster a try from Eoin O’Neill in the second half.
