Junior Rugby Round Up

The third round of the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup produced a few upsets as some exciting fourth round ties emerged.
One of the big shocks was in Kinsale where the home side saw off the challenge of Young Munster on a 24-8 score line.
Fergus Gimblett, Shane O’Connell and Dan Horgan scored tries for Kinsale and Sean Kingston kicked three penalties.
Kinsale will now host Garryowen in the next round after the Dooradoyle side defeated Richmond 18-6. This was a close contest until the final quarter when tries from Colm Quilligan and Dan Feasey and a conversion by Quilligan decided the outcome. Two penalties from Brian Mullins to one by Quilligan gave Richmond a 6-3 half time lead and Quilligan levelled the scores early in the second half.
Clonakilty had a home 17-7 win over U.C.C. Mark Purcell and Courtney Canning scored tries for Clon’ and Eoghan Deasy converted both and also added a penalty, Louis Kahn scored a try for the students and Louis Bruce converted.
Clon’ will now be away to Bandon in the next round after the west Cork side defeated Shannon 30-10. Ben Ridgeway contributed two tries, a conversion and a penalty to Bandon’s tally with Matthew Crowley, Tom Ferguson and Gearoid O’Leary being their other try scorers. Eathon Moloney and John Slater replied with tries for Shannon who were level 10-10 at half time.
Ballincollig defeated high flying Old Christians 39-7. Fionnan McDermott, Darragh O’Brien, Humphrey O’Mahony, Ronan Hennessy, Kieran O’Driscoll and Mick O’Shea scored tries for Ballincollig and Billy Newman kicked three conversions and a penalty. Matthew O’Connell replied with a try for Christians and John Marnell converted.
Ballincollig’s reward is a fourth round home tie against Galbally who had a narrow 14-12 away win over Old Crescent. A Patrick O’Donovan try and two penalties from John Kearns gave Galbally an 11-0 interval lead. Tries from Ciaran Cusack and Mark Rickard and a conversion by Kevin Meade edge Crescent ahead after sixty two minutes but a third penalty from Kearns ten minutes from time decided the outcome.
The tie of the fourth round tie will be the meeting of Highfield and Cork Constitution in a repeat of last season’s thrilling final.
Holders Highfield went to Ballyanly and defeated Muskerry 29-8.
George French, Dave Harrington, Dan O’Sullivan, Sean Quaid and Colin Lougheed scored tries for Highfield and Paddy O’Toole added two penalties. Brian McCarthy scored Muskerry’s try and Robert Cahill kicked a penalty.
Cork Constitution defeated Skibbereen 33-0 at Temple Hill. Harry Murphy, Ian Casey, Dara McNamara, David Good and Lar Coughlan scored tries for Con’ and McNamara added four conversions.
Mallow will face Kilfeacle in the next round following their 22-8 away win at Bruff. Owen Glynn, Sean Glynn and Eoghan Barry scored tries for Mallow and Dave Breen kicked two conversions and a penalty. Eric Flynn replied with a try for Bruff and Brian Cahill kicked a penalty.
All Ireland Junior Cup champions Kilfeacle saw off the challenge of St, Senan’s 51-10. Kevin Doyle scored three tries for the home side and Keith Bourke, William Bourke, Dave Ryan, Jack McLoughlin and Brian McLoughlin all scored tries. They were also awarded a penalty try with Willie Staunton kicking two conversions. Davy Dunne replied with a try for Senan’s and Declan Rowe converted and also added a penalty.
Kanturk and Cashel played out a 13-13 draw after extra time but it is the Tipperary side who advanced on the first try rule. Paul O’Keeffe opened the scoring with a penalty for Kanturk but a Michael Kelly try and a conversion by Eamonn Kelly had Cashel leading until a Bill Gorman try converted by O’Keeffe sent the game into extra time. Conor Cremin put Kanturk ahead with a penalty but a last minute penalty from Connolly tied up the scores.
Cashel will host Thurles in the next round after the Tipperary side defeated Fermoy 24-11. Paddy McGrath and Nicky Irwin scored tries for Thurles and Jack Flannigan kicked four penalties and a conversion. Ian Hutchinson scored a try for Fermoy and Eddie O’Connell kicked two penalties.
Newcastle West saw off the challenge of Thomond 27-22. Donal O’Sullivan, Ted Walters , James Kelly and Sean Ivess scored tries for Newcastle West. Sean Herlihy kicked a penalty and a conversion and Sean Neville also added a conversion. Conor Radcliffe, Ger Finucane and Warren Kelly replied with tries for Thomond and Adam Guerin kicked two conversions and a penalty
Crosshaven got back to winning ways with a 10-3 home win against Clanwilliam. Sean Grey scored a try for the winners and Cian McGovern converted and also added a penalty. Niall Leahy replied with a penalty for the visitors.
Charleville were 28-5 home winners over Ennis. Dave Moloney, Jack Buckley and Ed Moore scored tries for Charleville. Jesse Smith kicked three penalties and two conversions. Mikey Lyons scored a try Ennis.
In the only game played in the Munster Junior Plate Dungarvan defeated Waterford City 28-24 to setup an away tie with Bantry Bay. Adam Power scored two tries for Dungarvan and Mikey Phelan got one. They were also awarded a penalty try. David Hickey kicked two penalties.
