Junior Rugby Round-Up

Several Junior competitions were played in various parts of the province over the weekend as clubs prepare for the new style Junior League in October.
Newcastle West advanced to the semi-final of the Transfield Cup where they will meet Richmond after an impressive 57-19 win over Ennis. Cian Tierney scored two tries for the winners and Donal O’Sullivan, Shane Airey, John Walsh, Dave Foley, Brian O’Sullivan Sean Herlihy and Alex O’Halloran were their other try scorers. Herlihy kicked five conversions and Airey one.
Thomond booked their place in the final with a 33-10 win over UL Bohemian. Warren Kelly scored two tries for the winners and John Sheehan one. Adam Guerin converted all three tries and kicked four penalties.
In the Cork County Cup holders Bandon defeated Old Christians 40-31. Mark Bateman scored three tries for the winners and Kerry Desmond and Gearoid O’Leary got one each. They were also awarded a penalty try. Ben Ridgeway kicked four conversions. Christians replied with tries from Ryan O’Connell, Jeff Hodder, James Ahern, Ryan Sisk and Cian Smith. John Marnell added three conversions.
Bandon will be away to Crosshaven in next week’s semi-final after the Seasiders defeated Kanturk 33-12 at the Duhallow venue. Anthony Sheehan scored two tries for the winners and Ian Smith and Sean Gray got one each. Mikey Collins kicked three penalties and two conversions. Ciaran Boyce and Ronan O’Brien replied with tries for Kanturk and Sean O’Brien added a conversion.
Clonakilty defeated Skibbereen 33-14. Rob Howick and Olan Deane scored two tries each and Conor Hayes got one for Clonakilty. Mark Purcell added four conversions. Liam Hodnett and Denis McCarthy replied with tries for Skibb’ with McCarthy converting one.
Clonakilty will be away to Mallow in the other semi-final after the north Cork side defeated Muskerry 22-3 in the other quarter final.
Holders Kinsale are through to the semi-finals of the O’Neill Cup after their 43-0 away win at Dunmanway. Fergus Gimblett scored two tries for the winners, Conall Gilleran, Dan Cronin, Mark O’Connell, Timmy Lynch and Wayne Falvey got one each. Gilleran kicked three conversions and Josh Barrett one.
Kinsale will be away to Ballincollig in next week’s semi-final after the Tanner Park outfit defeated Cobh Pirates 23-0.
Charleville booked their place in the last four with a 19-5 away win at Fermoy. The winners were awarded two penalty tries and Darragh Brown also scored a try. PJ Lloyd replied with a try for Fermoy.
Mitchelstown defeated Youghal 15-0. Morgan Fox and skipper Josh Evans scored tries for Mitchelstown. Chris Noonan kicked a conversion and Sean Coughlan added a penalty. Mitchelstown will travel to Charleville next week in the second semi-final.
Killorglin are through to the McElligott Cup Final next week after their 24-5 win over Killarney. Gary O’Keeffe, Seamus Doyle, Darragh O’Shea and Shane O’Neill scored tries for Killorglin and Luke O’Shea added two conversions.
In the Mansergh Cup Kilfeacle defeated arch rivals Clanwilliam 27-13 and Galbally edged out Nenagh Ormond 11-10.
