Junior Rugby Roundup
21st April 2013 By Munster Rugby
Four finals were decided over the weekend with Young Munster, Killarney, Newcastle West and Midleton all winning silverware.
There was great drama in the Transfield Cup Final as Newcastle West defeated St. Mary’s 20-19 to win the trophy for the first time at Annacotty. Newcastle West led 14-12 at half time with tries from John Sheehan and Brian O’Sullivan. Alan Roche converted both and Ben Sargent replied with four penalties for the Corbally side. Roche added two further penalties after the break and Matthew Hickey replied with a try for Mary’s which Sargent converted. Sargent was off target with a penalty effort with the last kick of the game.
Killarney won the Munster Junior Plate for the second time in three years when they defeated near neighbours Castleisland 15-11 in an exciting game at Tralee.
Three penalties from Paudie Sheahan gave Killarney a 9-3 half time lead. Connie Reynolds replied with a penalty for Castleisland. Sheahan added two further penalties and Castleisland had a try from Mike Cronin and a second penalty by Reynolds.
Young Munster won the Munster Seconds League title with a 26-21 victory over U.L. Bohemian at Clifford Park. Jeff Clohessy and Darren Ryan scored tries for Munster’s and Shane O’Leary converted both and also kicked four penalties.
Midleton won the Junior Three Cup South Final at Musgrave Park with a 5-0 victory over holders Cork Transport. Brian Wall scored the all important try mid way through the first half.
Kanturk and Skibbereen will contest the Cork County Cup Final. Three tries from Sean Cremin and one by Paul Cotter helped Kanturk to a 26-7 away win over Cobh Pirates. Stephen McAuliffe converted three of the tries. Cobh’s reply was a try by John Kidney which Mark Chandler converted.
Skibbereen defeated Kinsale 39-22 in the other semi final. The winners led 24-15 at half time. David Shannon scored three tries, a conversion and a penalty and Kieran Shannon, Colm Hurley and John Hayes also got a try each. Steven Hansel kicked two conversions but the injury he picked up must make him very doubtful for next week’s Munster Junior Cup semi Final against holders Cork Constitution. Kinsale replied with tries from Frazer Hodgson, Ian Costello and Peter Murphy with Hodgson kicking two conversions and a penalty.
Two penalties from Jeff Daly was enough for Fermoy who defeated Dunmanway-Bantry Bay 6-0 in the semi final of the O’Neill Cup. They will meet Muskerry in the final after the Mid Cork side received a walk over from Youghal.
Richmond’s great season continues when their second XV defeated Fethard 11-6 to reach the final of the Webb Cup and a meeting with Thomond which will be a repeat of the Gleeson League Final. Mike Geary scored a try for Richmond and Dara Clancy kicked two penalties.
It is a repeat in the South also as Carrigaline and Cork Constitution will contest the Junior Two Cup Final.
Carrigaline reached their fourth final of the season with a 36-10 win over Kanturk at Moneygourney.
Ray Donoghue opened the scoring for Carrigaline with a try after seven minutes but Kanturk responded with a try from Barry Lucey which Stephen McAuliffe converted. Tony O'Keeffe, Peter Kelleher, John Tait and Ken Wilkins added further tries for the home side and Kelleher converted three of them. A McAuliffe penalty left it 31-10 at the break in favour of Carrigaline. The only score of the second half was a try by Tony O'Keeffe.
Cork Constitution booked their place in the final with a 27-14 home victory over Cobh Pirates. Con’ raced into an early 17-0 lead with tries from Killian O’Connor and Jack O’Sullivan, both of which Simon Barry converted and he also added a penalty. Cobh hit back with a try from Michael Keating and two penalties by Eoin McSweeney to leave it 17-11 at half time. Barry and McSweeney exchanged penalties before an injury time try by Rory O’Sullivan converted by Barry completed the scoring.
Mallow defeated Mitchelstown 25-7 to reach the final of the Paul Twomey Cup. Eric Twomey scored two tries for Mallow and Anthony Barrett and Neil Sexton got one each. Martin O’Connor kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Kinsale defeated Tralee 11-10 in the other semi final tie.
Muskerry will meet Fermoy in the McCarthy Cup final after Muskerry’s 31-19 away win over Dunmanway-Bantry Bay. Ian O’Sullivan scored two tries for Muskerry and Dave Nagle and James Roche got one each. Cian Fitzgerald kicked three penalties and a conversion.
