Junior Rugby Roundup 17th October

With only two series of games having been played in the Munster Junior League, patterns are already beginning to emerge at both the top and bottom of all three Divisions.

Cashel have opened up a one point lead in Division One as they collected maximum points for the second successive week with a 30-6 home win over Clonmel. The result does not do justice to the visitors who lost this game in a ten minute spell at the start of the second half after they had a player yellow carded.

Cian O’Connor opened the scoring with a try for the home side after eight minutes but two penalties by Danny Lyons had the visitors a point ahead as the game approached the half way mark.

John Ed O’Connor regained the lead for the home side with a try which Darragh O’Brien converted and just before the half time whistle sounded Clonmel’s Phil Corby was yellow carded.

On the restart a penalty and drop goal from O’Brien extended Cashel’s advantage and Kevin Quinlan scored a try before Clonmel were restored to fifteen for a 23-6 lead.

In the final minute Pat O’Connor secured the bonus point for the home side with a try which he also converted.

Defending champions Richmondwere surprisingly held at home by Kilfeacle 9-9. It was 3-3 at half time. Jeff McNamara kicked two penalties for the Limerickside and Michael Kelleher one. Shane Luby replied with three penalties for the visitors.

Crosshavendefeated newly promoted Old Christians 31-12 at Myrtleville to go into second place a point behind the leaders. The Rathcooney side led 12-7 at half time with four penalties from Aidan Tobin. Said Koya, Brian Murphy, Andrew Lane, Paul Cogan and Ross O’Connell were try scorers for the home side and Cian McGovern kicked three conversions.

Tralee’s title hopes received a set back when they lost away to Waterpark 16-10. The home side led 8-3 at half time with a try from Gerry Harney and a penalty by Jared Dunbar. Brian Mullins kicked a penalty for the visitors. Dunbaradded a penalty and a try after the break and despite a late rally in the final quarter Tralee’s only reply was a try and conversion from Mullins.

Clanwilliamwere brought back to earth after last week’s victory over Kilfeacle when they lost sensationally at home to Ballincollig 20-18. With seventy eight minutes gone on the clock the home side looked set for a second successive victory as they led 18-8 and were awarded a five meter scrum under the Ballincollig posts. The visitors gained possession and raced up the field where Kevin Lynch touched down and Denis Galvin converted. Ballincollig regained possession from the restart and Brian O’Mahony scored a third try for the Corkside to secure their first win of the campaign.

A penalty by Willie Dwyer and a Bernard O’Callaghan try gave the home side an early 8-0 advantage. Galvin opened his side’s account with a drop goal. Robbie Doyle extended the Tipperaryside’s lead with a try which Dwyer converted. Kevin Doyle scored a try for the visitors and a penalty from Dwyer looked like sealing the points for Clanwilliam until Ballincollig’ slate rally.

Cobh Piratescaused an upset at Skibbereen with an 18-11 victory. A try by Alan Langford and a penalty by Mark Chandler gave Cobhan 8-6 interval lead. David Shannon kicked two penalties for the home side. Sean O’Neill put Skibbereen ahead with a try, but a try by Joe Hoyne and a conversion and penalty by Chandlerearned the Pirates their first win.

St. Senan’sdefeated Thurles 20-13. Declan Collins scored two tries, conversion and a penalty and Fergal Lawler also scored a try for the Clare side.

Newly promoted Killarney have made a great start to their Second Division campaign as they share top spot with Galbally after their surprising 16-14 home win over Kinsale. The Corkside were one of the favourites for promotion and this second successive defeat has put a big dent in their promotion challenge. Jason Murphy scored a try and a penalty for the visitors and Peter Murphy kicked two penalties.

Galballycontinue their unbeaten run this season after a hard earned 11-6 away win over St. Mary’s. David Guerin kicked two penalties for Mary’s and Sean Lyons levelled with two for the visitors before a try from player coach Eddie Fraher earned Galbally the points.

Newcastle Westdefeated early pace setters Mallow 27-10. Niall Kelleher, Shane Magner, Mike Berkery and Richard Wall scored tries for the winners. Darren Hayes converted two and Tommy Kelleher kicked a penalty. Owen Glynn replied with a try for the visitors and Brian Morris kicked a conversion and penalty.

Ennisand Kanturk shared the spoils at the Clare venue with Brian Murphy kicking three penalties for Ennis and Darragh Meade replying with three for the North Corkside.

Muskerry collected maximum points with a 29-10 home win over Youghal. Eoin Keohane, Will Hanly, Aidan Murray and Pat Dennehy scored tries for Muskerry; Kevin McCarthy kicked a drop goal, Keohane a conversion and Dennehy two conversions.

A try by Mike Skinner and a conversion and three penalties by Micheal Ryan earned Newporta 16-3 home win over Charleville. Shane Corkery kicked a penalty for the visitors.

Castleislanddefeated Bandon 18-6. Kieran Downey scored two tries for the winners and Mark Connelly kicked a conversion and two penalties. Eoin O’Donovan replied with two penalties for Bandon.

Four sides share the lead in the Third Division. Scariff are the surprise joint leaders after they recorded their first ever bonus point win with a 34-11 home victory over Killorglin. Robbie Madden scored two tries for the Clare side and Joe McGrath, James Kelly, Barry Gibbons and Trevor Kelly all scored tries and James Kelly added two conversions.

Abbeyfealedefeated Shandon 49-3. Kieran McCarthy and Michael Enright got two tries each and David Collins, Mike Normile, Andrew Scannell, Colm Quirke and Michael Galvin one each. Scannell kicked two conversions.

Fermoy defeated BantryBay38-0. Joe Lee got two tries for the winners and Lawrence Lomasney, Darren Roche and Denis Howard one apiece. Shane O’Riordan maintained his 100% kicking record with five conversions and a penalty.

Corca Dhuibhnehad a surprisingly 35-5 home win over WaterfordCity.Jack Dooley scored two tries for the winners and Conor Begley, Chris Ferriter and Ciaran Collins scored one each. Collins kicked two conversions and two penalties. Alex Walsh scored a try for the Suirsiders who trailed 6-5 at half time.

Two tries from James Wallace and one by Michael Cronin and David Kiersey and a penalty and three conversions by Cronin gave Carrick-on-Suir a 29-10 away win over Kilrush.

Four penalties by Mark Phayer helped Presentation to a 12-10 home win over Douglas.David O’Callaghan scored a try for the visitors and Eoin Philpott kicked a conversion and penalty.
