Weather again disrupts weekend program as St Mary’s move into second place In Munster Junior League and Bandon, Clanwilliam and Thurles keep promotion hopes alive in Division 2

St. Mary’s closed the gap on leaders Kanturk in the Munster Junior League Division 1 to two points after their narrow 10-9 away win over Cobh Pirates. Two penalties from Tom Rice gave the home side a 6-5 interval lead. Paul Laughlin replied with a try for Mary’s. Rice extended Cobh’s advantage with a third penalty but in the final minute Brian Downey scored a try for Mary’s to secure the points.

Galbally moved off the foot of the table after their 17-13 away win over Old Christians in a game that was transferred from Rathcooney to the Mahon. Wallace Bourke and Shane Flavin scored tries for the winners and Sean Bourke converted both and also added a penalty. Tom Maher scored a try for Christians and Stuart Lee kicked a conversion and two penalties.

The Skibbereen v Muskerry league tie was postponed because of the weather.

In Division Two Clanwilliam kept their promotion hopes alive with a 23-11 home win over second placed Kinsale. The sides were level 6-6 at half time with Brian Kissane kicking two penalties for the Tipperary side and Sean Kingston replied with two penalties for Kinsale. Tries from Bryan O’Rahilly and David McCormack and two conversions and a penalty by Kissane ensured victory for Clanwilliam. Kinsale’s only reply was a try by Kingston.

Thurles have moved into third place after their 41-15 away win over Crosshaven. David Walsh, Phillip King and Ronan Maher scored tries for Thurles who were also awarded a penalty try. Eoghan O’Dwyer kicked five penalties and three conversions. Garret Fitzgerald and Ian Smith replied with tries for Crosshaven and Smith kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Bandon kept their promotion challenge alive with a 20-14 home win over Castleisland. Gearoid Crowley and Kevin Lucey scored tries for Bandon and Richard Walsh converted both and also kicked two penalties. John McCarthy replied with a try for the Kerry side and Connie Reynolds added three penalties.

Holders Kanturk defeated Tralee 25-16 in their opening game in the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup. Kanturk led 13-9 at half time with a try from Luke McCabe and two penalties and a conversion from Stephen McAulliffe. Ciaran Crowley replied with three penalties for the Kerry side. Bryan O’Neill and Mark Healy added further tries for the Duhallow side and McAulliffe kicked a conversion. Jamie Byrne had a try for Tralee which Crowley converted. Kanturk’s reward in the next round is an away trip to either Kilfeacle or Clonmel whose game was postponed.

St. Senan’s defeated Presentation 8-6 in the Munster Junior Clubs Shield and the Limerick side will regret the many missed scoring chances. Fernando Gallant scored a try for the Clare side and Declan Row added a penalty. Greg Airey replied with two penalties for Presentation.

Tries from Brian Dolan, David O’Connor and Jason Considine and a conversion and penalty by David Murphy gave Ennis a 20—5 win over Waterford City. Stephen O’Rourke replied with a try for the visitors.

Killarney defeated Newport 19-3. Brian O'Sullivan, Eamon McGuire and Shane McSweeney scored tries for Killarney and Paudie Sheahan added two conversions. Philip O’Brien kicked a penalty for Newport.

Two second half penalties from Cathal O’Keeffe gave Fermoy a 6-0 away win over Scariff in their opening game in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. Fermoy will be away to Douglas in the next round.

Clonmel and Cork Constitution began their South Junior 2 League Group B campaign with a 5-5 draw at the Tipperary venue. Joe O’Dwyer was Clonmel’s try scorer.

Mitchelstown opened their Mick Barry Cup campaign with a 27-7 home win over Waterford City. Sean Coughlan, PJ Moloney, Patrick Norris, and Colm Hayes scored tries for the North Cork side. Coughlan kicked a conversion and a penalty and Michael Hayes also added a conversion.

Waterpark lost at home to Old Christians 14-11 in the same competition. Ben Cross scored a try for Waterpark and Geoff Deegan kicked two penalties.

There were double celebrations for Bruff as they won both the North Munster Under 18 and 16 League Finals. They defeated Young Munster 12-10 in the Under 18 Final and Shannon 15-5 in the Under 16 decider.
