Over a third of the weekend competitive games failed to go ahead as the current economic conditions start to hit clubs.
Kilfeacle won the big Tipperary derby with a 30-7 away win over Clanwilliam.
The winners led 25-0 at half time and had two tries from Pat Ryan and Brian O’Brien and one from Pierce Breen. Shane Loony kicked a conversion and a penalty. Ian O’Rahelly scored a consolation try for the home side in the final minute and Brian Kissane converted.
Cobh Pirates caused another upset with a 22-12 home win over Tralee. The winners led 22-6 at half time with tries from Peter Aherne, Jack Barrett and John Kidney. Mark Chandler kicked two conversions and a penalty. Garrett Walsh replied with four penalties for the Kerry side.
Richmond easily saw off the challenge of Thurles with a 48-7 victory at Richmond Park. The winners led 34-0 at half time. Garrett O’Hanlon scored two tries and Tomas Aherne, Jeff McNamara, Thomas O’Brien, Gearoid Phelan and Ross O’Neill. Jonathon Forde kicked four conversions and a penalty and Darragh Clancy also added a conversion.
Both Ballincollig and Youghal received walk overs in the Munster Junior Clubs Shield.
Newcastle West edged out St. Mary’s in a thriller at the West Limerick venue with a last minute try from Alan Roche which Tom Kelleher converted for a 17-16 victory. The home side led 7-3 at half time with a try by Roy Keating which Roche converted to a penalty by Sean Lyons. Roche extended Newcastle West’s advantage with a penalty but Mary’s hit back with a try from Niall Hartigan and a conversion and two penalties by Lyons.
Newly promoted Presentation defeated Bandon 20-10 at the West Cork venue. .Mark Phair and Ger Hall were the visitors try scorers with Phair kicking two conversions and two penalties. Tim Crowley and Ger Paul Lucey replied with tries for Bandon.
The other promoted side Scariff lost at home to Mallow 14-10. Sean Glynn scored all of Mallow’s points with a try and three penalties. Tom Cronin and Darra McNamara replied with tries for the Clare side.
Kinsale defeated Muskerry 23-5. Renaud Sergre, Andy Lynch and Ian Costello scored tries for the winners and Paul Perez kicked two penalties and a conversion. Rob Mahony replied with a try for the visitors.
Abbeyfeale defeated Kilrush 20-15 in the opening round of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup with a 20-15 victory. The winners led 12-3 at half time. Colin Quirke scored two tries for the winners, Patrick Twomey kicked two penalties and a conversion for Abbeyfeale and Michael Roche added a conversion.
Charleville defeated Corca Dhuibhne at Ballydavid 13-5. Ger Sheehan scored two tries for the North Cork side and Frank Holly kicked a drop goal.
Tries from Dermot Fahy and Ciaran O’Sullivan and a conversion and penalty by Con Foley earned Dungarvan a 15-10 away victory over Killorglin.
Waterford City defeated Bantry Bay 44-14. Colin Lynch and Sean O’Mahony scored two tries each for the winners and John Doran and David Whelan got one each with Aaron Foskin kicking four penalties and two conversions.
It was a mixed day for Cork Constitution after their Junior side defeated Sunday’s Well 34-8 in the Munster Seconds League. Simon Hanbidge scored two of the winner’s five tries, with Conor Desmond, Brian Vaughan and Eoin O’Donnell getting the others. Peter O’Sullivan kicked three conversions and a penalty. Darren Blower scored a try for the ‘Well and Pat McSweeney kicked a penalty.
Carrigaline caused a big shock in the Dennehy Cup with a 23-12 away win over holders Cork Constitution. Shane McCarthy, Dave O’Donoghue and Roy Murphy scored tries for the winners and John Tait kicked a conversion and a penalty.
Carrigaline will face Highfield in next week’s semi finals after the Woodleigh Park side defeated Mallow 30-11. Matthew Kelleher scored two tries for the winners and Dave Norris and Peter Cotter scored one each. Mick Hayden and Darragh O’Keeffe each kicked a conversion and a penalty. Brian McMahon replied with a try for Mallow and Ger Deady kicked two penalties.
The other semi final will be between Cobh Pirates and Old Christians. Cobh defeated Muskerry 30-3 with Greg Higgins, Ken Calahane, Conor Farrell and Dave Mulcahy scoring tries and Higgins added two conversions and two penalties.
Old Christians defeated Ballincollig 34-17 at Rathcooney. Arthur Crowley and Conor Owens each scored tries for Ballincollig, Paul Dinneen kicked a conversion and a penalty and Keith Stafford added a conversion.
