Junior Rugby Roundup

A gap begins to emerge at the top of Division 1 of the Munster Junior League after three series of games with both Clonmel and Kilfeacle being the only sides with maximum points.

Defending champions Clonmel travelled to Youghal and defeated their hosts 39-10 scoring six tries with Dave O’Gorman, Nick Thomson, Greg Carroll, Neville Melbourne, Luke Hogan and Sean Sweetman all crossing the line. Conor Cooney kicked three conversions and a penalty. Gavin Dower scored Youghal’s try and Keith McCarthy kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Kilfeacle also have maximum points after their 41-15 home win against Waterpark. Gavin Heuston, Jack McLoughlin, Cormac O’Donoghue and Jamie Heuston scored tries for Kilfeacle who were also awarded a penalty try. Jamie Heuston kicked four conversions and two penalties. Mark Molloy and Danny O’Driscoll replied with tries for Waterpark and Tom Kiersey kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Richmond defeated Kanturk 20-13 in a thrilling game at the Duhallow venue. Brian Mullins kicked Richmond into the lead with two penalties but Paul O’Keeffe tied the scores 6-6 at half time with two penalties. Tries from Tadgh Bennett and Eoin Hanley both converted by Mullins made it 20-6, before Ronan O’Brien scored a late try for Kanturk and Con Cremin’s conversion secured Kanturk a losing bonus point.

Skibbereen snatched a dramatic win at home to Clanwilliam when a try from Peter Marshall in the last play of the game earned them a 19-15 victory. Kieran Shannon and Kevin Coombes scored Skibbereen’s other tries and Denis McCarthy converted both. Sean Walsh and Sean Meagher were Clanwilliam’s try scorers and Niall Leahy added a conversion and a penalty.

Bandon bounced back to winning ways after last week’s shock defeat by Skibbereen with a 20-7 away win at Galbally. Santiago Gonzalez and Rob O’Sullivan scored tries for Bandon and Rhys Harrold converted both and added two penalties.

Newcastle West kept up there challenge with a 22-10 home win over St. Senan’s. Sean Herlihy was Newcastle West’s man of the match scoring two tries, two conversions and a penalty. Cian Hinchy also added a try. Ian Fitzgerald scored Senan’s try and Declan Rowe converted and added a penalty.

Cobh Pirates lost at home to Abbeyfeale 15-3. Michael Roche and Jake Quirke were Abbeyfeale’s try scorers and Derry O’Connor kicked a conversion and a penalty. Ian Jones kicked a penalty for the home side.

Kinsale remain top of Division Two after their 25-3 away win at Rathcooney against Old Christians. Mark O’Connell, Fergus Gimblett and Sean Kingston scored tries for Kinsale. Barry McGrory kicked a drop goal and a conversion and Kingston added a penalty and a conversion. John Marnell replied with a penalty for Old Christians.

St. Mary’s moved into second place two points behind the leaders with a game in hand after their 28-0 away win at Killarney. Ger McInerney, Tommy Galvin, Robert Brockert and Jamie O’Sullivan scored tries for the Saints and Paul Loughran converted all four tries.

Clonakilty and Crosshaven are a point behind Mary’s in third place.

Clonakilty defeated Waterford City 43-7 with tries from Maurice Shanley, Gavin Ridgeway, Dan Murphy, Courtney Canning, Stephen Cotter and Duncan Cooke. Mark Purcell kicked five conversions and a penalty.

Crosshaven defeated Thurles 24-10. Darren O’Keeffe, Fionn Foley and Shane Bushe scored tries for Crosshaven. They were also awarded a penalty try and Michael Lynch kicked a conversion. Eoghan O’Dwyer replied with a try for Thurles and John Lillis added a conversion and a penalty.

Castleisland defeated Muskerry 25-19 to make it two wins out of two for the Kerry side. Mike Cronin, Brian Leonard and Kieran Downey scored tries for Castleisland. Leonard kicked two conversions and two penalties. Joe Treacy scored Muskerry’s try, Jonathan Buckley converted and added three penalties. Ciaran O’Connor also kicked a penalty.

Ballincollig defeated Mitchelstown 28-3 with tries from Derry Gleeson, Robbie McSweeney, Martin McCarthy and John Sheehan. All four tries were converted by Sheehan.

Dungarvan and Tralee are the early pace setters in Division Three.

Dungarvan had a narrow 18-17 away win at Fermoy. David Hickey and Andrew Carey were Dungarvan’s try scorers. Hickey kicked two penalties and a conversion. Rob O’Flaherty, Dylan Lacey and Peter Clancy replied with tries for Fermoy and Lacey kicked a conversion.

Tralee defeated Chorca Dhuibhne in their first ever Junior League meeting 12-5 at Ballydavid. Jess Foley and Simon Behan scored tries for Tralee and Ben O’Neill kicked a conversion. Alan Devane replied with a try for the Kerry Gaeltacht side.

Charleville also made it two wins from two after their 16-3 win at Bantry. PJ O’Connor scored Charleville’s try and Odhran Hennessy kicked a conversion and three penalties. Andre Polivka kicked a penalty for Bantry Bay.

Douglas-Carrigaline lost 50-5 at home to Killorglin. Alan Drumm scored the home side’s try. Â
