Junior Rugby Round Up

Junior Club action took place over the weekend.

In the Junior Clubs Challenge Cup Holders Clonmel lost at home to Richmond in a thrilling tie 16-14. Richmond dominated the opening half and led 13-5 at half time with a try from Gearoid Phelan and a conversion and two penalties by Brian Mullins to a try from Luke Noonan for Clonmel. Two penalties by Dylan Cadogan and one by Declan Cass had Clonmel leading 14-13 with thirteen minutes remaining. Four minutes from time Mullins kicked a penalty for Richmond to book them their place in the quarter-finals.

St. Senan’s defeated last year’s beaten finalists Waterpark 14-10. Gary Graham and Craig Airey scored tries for Senan’s and Airey converted both tries. Rory Hannon was Waterpark’s try scorer and Glen Kavanagh kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Kilfeacle after last week’s mishap which saw their league game with Newcastle West postponed accounted for Galbally 20-3. Stephen Quirke, and Patrick Ryan scored tries for Kilfeacle who were also awarded a penalty try and Shane Luby kicked a penalty.

Abbeyfeale ended Skibbereen’s good start to the season with a 35 -7 victory. Trent Reti and James O’Mara each scored two tries for Abbeyfeale and Michael Roche got one. Steve Daly kicked two penalties and two conversions. Cillian Newman scored Skibb’s try and Matthew Bushe converted.

The quarter final line up which are scheduled for Saturday 10th November is- St. Senan’s v Richmond, Abbeyfeale v Newcastle West, Clanwilliam v Kilfeacle, Kanturk v Bandon.

Thurles are the only non Cork side to have qualified for the last eight of the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield after a last minute penalty by John Lillis earned them a 25-22 home win over Muskerry. Ciaran Ryan scored two tries for Thurles and Eoghan O’Dwyer got one. Lillis kicked two conversions and two penalties. Aidan Kelleher, Sean O’Riordan and Jonathan Buckley scored tries for Muskerry and Buckley added two conversions and a penalty.

Ballincollig defeated Castleisland 30-10. Conor Downey, Shane Kavanagh and Michael Ward scored tries for Ballincollig and Charlie Boland kicked three penalties and three conversions.

Cobh Pirates won the east Cork derby defeating Youghal 17-13. Eoin McSweeney scored a try for the Pirates and Max Kahn kicked four penalties. Alan Frahill replied with a try for Youghal and Aaron Daly converted and added two penalties.

The line-up for the quarter finals of the Junior Clubs Challenge Shield is – Charleville v Mallow; Ballincollig v Thurles; Cobh Pirates v Old Christians and Clonakilty v Kinsale.

Only one of the three games scheduled in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup went ahead which saw Bantry Bay defeat Dunmanway 13-3 under lights at Dunmanway. Pronsais Cronin and Declan Coppinger scored tries for Bantry Bay and Andre Polivka kicked a penalty. Darragh McCarthy replied with a penalty for Dunmanway.

The quarter final line up in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup is- Killorgan v Bantry Bay, Killarney v Chorca Dhuibhne, Dungarvan v Mitchelstown and Ennis v Scariff.
