Junior Rugby Round Up

Mallow and Newcastle West share top spot in Division 1 of the Munster Junior League after bonus point wins, as Kilfeacle won the big Tipperary derby.

Newcastle West continue their quest for a first Junior League title after a 34-17 away win at Galbally, Ted Walter scored two tries for the winners and Sean Herlihy, Sean Neville and Michael Burke scored one try each. Herlihy kicked three conversions and a penalty. Galbally replied with tries from Jack Dorgan and Jack Hogan and John Kerins converted both and added one penalty.

Mallow defeated St. Senan’s 32-18 to remain joint leaders with Newcastle West and both these sides are due to meet in their next game.

Brian Henry scored two tries for Mallow in their bonus point win. Owen Glynn and David Breen were their other try scorers with Breen kicking two conversions and three penalties. Adam McEvoy and Liam Coughlin replied with tries for Senan’s and Declan Rowe kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Kilfeacle defeated arch rivals Clanwilliam 22-10. Diarmuid O’Donovan opened the scoring with a try for Kilfeacle but Niall Leahy hit back with a penalty for Clanwilliam. Tries from James Hogan and Cathal O’Donovan both converted by Willie Staunton and a Staunton penalty ensured victory for Kilfeacle. Darragh Crowe scored a late try for Clanwilliam which Leahy converted.

A last minute try by Derry O’Connor ended Clonakilty’s unbeaten start as they lost at home to Abbeyfeale 12-10. A try from Aaron Hayes and a conversion and a penalty by Eoghan Deasy gave Clon’ a 10-0 half time lead. Patrick Murphy opened Abbeyfeale’s account with a try which O’Connor converted.

Bandon travelled to Richmond and recorded their first win of the campaign 31-9. They trailed 9-3 at half time with Brian Mullins kicking three penalties for Richmond and Ben Ridgeway replying for Bandon. However two yellow cards which saw Richmond reduced to thirteen players saw Bandon take advantage with Ridgeway scoring two tries and Kerry Desmond and Ciaran Roberts got a try each. Ridgeway converted all four tries.

Thomond ran in eleven tries in their 73-13 home win over Waterpark. Ger Finucane, Ryan Ahern, Warren Kelly, Eoin Sherlock scored two tries each. Evan O’Connor, David Quinn and Adam Guerin also scored tries. Sherlock kicked eight conversions and Guerin one. Paddy Kiersey replied with a try for Waterpark and John Flynn converted and kicked two penalties.

Crosshaven defeated Skibbereen 26-3 in Skibbereen on Saturday with tries from Shane Bushe, Jamie Kind, Darren O’Keeffe and Killian O’Keeffe. Cian McGovern converted three of the tries and Matthew Bushe replied with a penalty for Skibb’.

Dungarvan defeated St Mary’s 20-15 in their top of the table clash in Division 2 at Grove Island. Daniel Slevin scored two tries for Dungarvan and Seamus Keating got one. Dave Hickey added a penalty and a conversion.

Kanturk continue their impressive start in Division 2 with a 24-12 home win over Fethard. Sean O’Brien, Brendan Kelleher and Conor O’Sullivan scored tries for Kanturk and Paul O’Keeffe converted all three tries and added one penalty.

Old Christians made it three wins from three after their 18-10 away win at Cobh. Tim Hegarty and Brian Sisk scored tries for the winners and John Marnell added a conversion and two penalties. Sam Baricaua scored a try for Cobh and Adam Devlin converted and also kicked a penalty.

Kinsale maintained their challenge with a 37-22 away win at Ballincollig. Joe Moriarty, Philip Walters, Pat O’Regan, Jason O’Sullivan and Sean Kingston scored tries for Kinsale and Kingston converted three of the tries and added two penalties. Cathal Owens replied with two tries for Ballincollig and Sam Kiely got one. Charlie Boland kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Muskerry were 16-10 home winners over Thurles. Pa Rourke scored Muskerry’s try and Robert Cahill converted and added three penalties.

Tries from Jack Buckley and Jake Morrissey both converted by Jessie Smith and three Smith penalties helped Charleville to a 23-6 away win at Castleisland. Joe Sheehy kicked two penalties for the home side.

Fermoy defeated Tralee 17-12. Sean Leahy and Michael Sweeney were Fermoy’s try scorers and Eddie O’Connell converted both and kicked one penalty. Ronan O’Sullivan and Conor Ó’Nuallain scored tries for Tralee and Jack Quilter converted one.

Ennis are the early pace setters in Division 3 after their 35-3 away win against Chorca Dhuibhne. Ronan O’Halloran (Ennis) and Seamus Moriarty exchanged early penalties before the Clare side took control with two tries from Michael Lyons; David Flynn, Morgan Garry and Cian Guilfoyle got a try each. O’Halloran added a penalty and three conversions.

Waterford City are their nearest challengers after their 48-3 away win against Douglas-Carrigaline. Padraig McSweeney kicked a penalty for the home side.

Killorglin defeated Scariff 25-5. Timmy Lynch, Kevin Courtney and Seamus Doyle scored tries for Killorglin and Luke O’Shea kicked two conversions and two penalties. Austin McMahon replied with a try for Scariff.

Killarney won their first game with a 26-18 home win over Dunmanway. Paul Moynihan (2), David Howard and Joshua Fawcett were try scorers for Killarney and Paudie Sheahan converted three of the tries.

Mitchelstown defeated Bantry Bay 9-7 in a game that also doubled up as a Martin O’Sullivan Cup tie. Pa Magee kicked three penalties for the winners and Brian Kehoe replied with a try for Bantry and Sean O’Shea converted.
