Holders Garryowen given fright by Bruff in Munster Junior Cup as St. Senan’s defeat St. Mary’s in only upset

Holders Garryowen had to come from behind to defeat Bruff 15-13 in Group B of the opening round of the Munster Junior Cup. Eamonn Connolly opened the scoring with a penalty for the Light Blues. Ritchie McAuliffe tied up the scores with a penalty for Bruff before a try by Ronan Hogan converted by Murray gave Garryowen a 10-3 half time lead. McAuliffe kicked his second penalty and then converted a try by Steve O’Shea to put Bruff 13-10 ahead. Steve McMahon kept Garryowen in the competition with a late try.

St. Senan’s who won promotion from the Second Division last week caused a shock at Jim Slattery Park with a 30-14 home win over a fancied St. Mary’s side. Jake Egan, Fernando Gallant, Emile Mafite and Warren Kelly scored tries for Senan’s and Declan Rowe kicked two conversions and two penalties. Brian Downey and Ben Sargent replied with tries for Mary’s and Sargent converted both.

There were two all senior clashes. At Annacotty U.L. Bohemian overcame the challenge of Young Munster 20-15. Tim Rafferty, Darren Moloney and Rory Cunningham were try scorers for UL and Rafferty kicked a conversion and Moloney a penalty. Conor O’Brien and Dermot Allen scored tries for Munster’s and Declan Browne added a penalty and a conversion.

Nenagh Ormond defeated Richmond 15-9 at Richmond Park. Darren Hassey and Ger O’Gorman scored tries for Nenagh and Kevin Seymour kicked a conversion and a penalty. Niall Benson replied with three penalties for the home side. Nenagh will now have a home tie against St. Senan’s in the next round.

Two First Division Junior sides defeated Senior clubs. Kilfeacle beat Shannon 45-24. Jack Sullivan, Johnny Hannigan, Diarmuid Carr and Mossy Morrissey were try scorers for the Tipperary side and Gavin Heuston kicked four penalties and three conversions.

Newcastle West easily overcame the challenge of Old Crescent 34-6. Tries from Sean Herlihy and Alan Roche and a Roche conversion gave the West Limerick side a 12-6 interval lead. Paddy Sullivan kicked two penalties for Old Crescent. Two tries from Herlihy and one by Gary O’Donnell together with two conversions from Roche and a penalty by Herlihy saw the junior side book their place in Round Three.

Galbally defeated Abbeyfeale 20-3 with tries from Colin Watters and Pat Cussen and Sean Bourke kicked two penalties and two conversions. David Ward replied with a penalty for Abbeyfeale.

Clanwilliam beat Ennis 20-3. Gavin Ryan and Vivian Grisewood scored tries for the winners and Brian Kissane kicked two penalties and two conversions.

Thurles will travel to Garryowen in Round Two after their 32-17 home win over Presentation. Eoghan O’Dwyer scored three tries, three conversions and two penalties for the winners and Paddy Phelan also scored a try. Presentation replied with tries from Greg Airey and David Cleary. Alan Airey converted both and also added a penalty.

Thomond received a walk over from Newport.

In Group A Junior League leaders Kanturk were surprisingly beaten 29-3 at home to Highfield. Colin Lougheed, Peter Martin, Niall O’Brian and Fintan O’Sullivan were Highfield’s try scorers and Colm Downes kicked three conversions and a penalty. Steve McAuliffe replied with a penalty for Kanturk.
Cork Constitution easily overcame the challenge of Cobh Pirates at the paddocks with a 28-0 victory. Two tries from Eoin O’Donnell and two penalties by Gearoid O’Suilleabhain had Con’ 16-0 ahead at half time. Barry Fitzgerald and a third try from O’Donnell and a conversion by O’Suillibhean saw the Temple Hill side through to round two.

Both Clonakilty and Skibbereen both recorded 39-0 wins over Waterford opposition. At The Vale Clonakilty defeated Waterpark with tries from Peter Shallow, JD O’Mahony, Stephen Cotter, Thomas Keogh and Ethan Jennings. Joe Lee kicked four conversions and two penalties.

Dungarvan lost at home to Skibbereen. David Shannon scored two tries for the winners and Gearoid Calnan, Robbie Byrne, Stephen Cotter and Vinny White got one each. Ger Hurley kicked three conversions and a penalty.

Killarney defeated Sunday’s Well with a last minute penalty in extra time 15-12. James O’Sullivan and Willie McCarthy scored tries for the ‘Well and O’Sullivan kicked a conversion.

Both UCC and Cashel recorded two home wins over Third Division opposition. U.C.C. inflicted a first defeat of the season on Ballincollig at the Mardyke wining 40-10. Steve Dinan, Will Korytko, Dan Healy, Aaron Hogan, Seamus Glynn and Kevin Kidney were College’s try scorers and Dave O’Riordan kicked five conversions. Bobby Foulkes replied with two tries for Clonakilty.

Cashel beat Charleville 22-10. Kieran Murphy scored two tries for the Tipperary side and Josh Moynihan and Andy Kelleher got one each and Kelleher added a conversion. Willie O’Sullivan scored a try for Charleville and Peadar Cronin kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Mallow easily accounted for Douglas 45-13. A try by Michael Meehan and a conversion and two penalties by Eoin Philpott gave Douglas a 13-10 half time lead. Tim Gardiner and Rory McSherry were Mallow’s first half try scorers. Gardiner, Brian Thornton, Sam Holt, Hugh Barry and Andy Cashman added tries after the break and Cashman kicked five conversions.

Newcomers Carrigaline lost at home to Midleton 23-0. Louis Farnham was one of Midleton’s try scorers and Luke Deane kicked two conversions and a penalty.

In the all Second Division clash at Crosshaven Kinsale defeated the home side 22-13. Eamon Ring scored a try for Crosshaven and Ian Smith kicked a conversion and two penalties. Joe Lyons, Peter Murphy, Damien Kozik and Richard Kingston scored tries for Kinsale’s and Murphy added a conversion.

Only one game was postponed because of the weather and that was the tie between Killorglin and Dolphin.

Carrick-on-Suir, Castleisland and Fermoy all gave walk overs to Clonmel, Youghal and Tralee respectively.

Muskerry assured their place in Division One of the Munster Junior League for next season with a 19-6 away win over Old Christians. The sides were level 6-6 at half time with Darragh Masterson kicking two penalties for Muskerry and Stuart Lee replying with two for the Rathcooney side. A try from Liam O’Donovan and a conversion and two further penalties by Masterson saw Muskerry take the spoils.
