Junior Rugby Round-Up & Results
Two of the three Munster clubs involved in the quarter finals of the All Ireland Junior Cup have qualified for the semi-finals.
Newcastle West made the long journey to Enniskillen a side that received a walk over from Bandon in the opening round and the visitors comfortably advanced 28-35.
They led 15-3 at half time with tries from Dave Foley and Stephen Kelly. Sean Herlihy kicked a conversion and a penalty. James Kelly scored a third try for Newcastle West to put the game beyond the Ulster side and Herlihy converted and added two penalties.
Kilfeacle made their second visit to Connacht and defeated Connemara 12-10. A penalty try gave Kilfeacle a 7-3 interval lead and a second half try from James Hogan ensured the Tipperary’s side passage to the last four.
Holders Ashbourne defeated Clonmel 22-13 at the Co. Meath venue. Indiscipline proved costly to Clonmel as at one stage Clonmel had two players in the sin bin and the Meath side took full advantage. Dylan Cadogan kicked two penalties for Clonmel who trailed 14-6 at half time. Diarmuid Devaney scored a late try which Pat O’Connor converted.
The other tie resulted in a 6-3 home win for Ballina against Instonians.
There was very little action on the local scene with only one of the quarter finals of the Junior Clubs Shield going ahead where Clonakilty defeated Kinsale 43-19.
It was only in the final quarter that Clonakilty made sure of victory. They led 19-14 at half time. Rob Finglas scored two of Clonakilty’s six tries. Maurice Shanley, Andrew McCarthy, Tom Oige Scannell and Mark Purcell were the other try scorers. Purcell kicked five conversions and a penalty. Damian Kozik replied with two tries for Kinsale and Barry McGrory landed three penalties.
Clonakilty will now be away to the winners of next week’s tie between Old Christians and Thurles.
The Killarney v Ballincollig tie was postponed and no new date has been set yet.
Muskerry await the winners of this tie as they received a walk over from Crosshaven.
In the Martin O’Sullivan Cup, Division Three League leaders Fethard continued their unbeaten run with a 19-5 away win at Fermoy. This game was transferred to the North Cork venue after the Tipperary venue was unplayable.
Fethard led 19-0 at half time with tries from Gary Kavanagh, Shane Kavanagh and Willie Morgan. Gary Kavanagh converted two of the tries. Fermoy’s only response in the second half was a try from Eddie O’Connell.
Killorglin won the Kerry derby defeating Tralee 26-22 in a hard fought contest. Cathal Doyle, Mikey Harrington, Rob Lynch and Tony Lynch were Killorglin’s try scorers and Luke O’Shea kicked three conversions. Jeaic O Suilleabhain, Fearghal O Nualain and Jeff Foley replied with tries for Tralee and Jack Quilter converted two and also added a penalty.

In Junior 2 League South Cork Constitution defeated Cobh Pirates 34-10. Doug Abbott and Dave king each scored two tries for the winners, Gordon Good and Gavin Fitzgerald got one apiece. Robin O’Flynn kicked two conversions. Sean McDermott replied with a try for Cobh and Sean Meade converted and also kicked a penalty.
