Junior Rugby Roundup & Weekend Results

Kilfeacle lost out to Ashbourne in the All Ireland Junior Cup Final as progress was made in the Bank of Ireland Munster Junior Cup.

At Port Laoise on Saturday Kilfeacle failed to take advantage of the elements as they trailed to the defending champions 8-3 at half time. Kilfeacle did finish stronger but it was Ashbourne who retained the trophy with an 18-9 victory. Donal Crotty was Ashbourne’s hero scoring 13 of his side’s tally. Jamie Heuston replied with three penalties for Kilfeacle.

For the second week running Tralee caused a major upset in the Bank of Ireland Munster Cup with a 27-17 home win over Highfield.

It certainly gave former Highfield player Liam Quaid who now coaches Tralee great satisfaction to see his side who are second last in Division Three of the Munster Junior League advance to Round Five of the competition.

Gearoid O’Mahony gave Highfield an early lead with a try but a try by Ronan O’Sullivan converted by Jack Quilter put Tralee ahead.

Tries from Dave O’Sullivan and Paul Stack and a conversion by Dave Eustace gave Highfield a 17-7 half time lead.

A penalty and a try by Quilter reduced the margin to two points early in the second half. Tries from Mikey Lyne and Fearghal Ó’Nuallain saw Tralee advance to an away tie against Cashel or Muskerry whose tie was postponed because of the weather.

Holders Bandon began their defence with a hard earned 18-13 away win over Abbeyfeale. Olan Crowley and Santiago Gonzalez scored tries for Bandon. Rhys Harrold kicked a conversion and two penalties. Abbeyfeale had a try from Liam O’Connor and Tom Hassett kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Bandon will now face Cork Constitution in the next round after the Temple Hill side defeated St. Senan’s 47-11 at the Clare venue. Aidan McMahon scored a try for Senan’s and Declan Rowe kicked two penalties.

Richmond advanced to a home tie against Waterpark after their 36-12 away win at Clanwilliam. Kealan Stephenson, Eoin Hanley, Jeff McNamara, Pat Humphries and Ryan Meagher scored tries for Richmond. Tadgh Bennett kicked four conversions and a penalty. Kieran Merrigan and Darragh Crowe replied with tries for Clanwilliam and Niall Leahy kicked a conversion.

A last minute try earned Waterpark a 27-26 away win at Skibbereen. Peter Traynor and Paddy Kiersey scored first half tries and Tom Kiersey converted both and kicked a penalty for a 17-14 interval lead. Mark Molloy added two second half tries for the visitors.

Kevin Coombes, Kieran Shannon, Rory Hone and Dave Jennings replied with tries for Skibb’ and Denis McCarthy kicked three conversions.

Tries from Alex Sheehan and Nick Thomson and a Dylan Cadogan conversion earned Clonmel a 12-0 win at Kanturk.

Last year’s beaten finalists Young Munster defeated Youghal 23-10 with tries from Joe O’Connor, Luke Fitzgerald and Mark O’Mara. Adam Guerin kicked two penalties and a conversion. Youghal were awarded a penalty try and Jonathan Ormond kicked a penalty.

Shannon defeated Old Crescent 36-26 in a thrilling tie at Rosbrien. Mark Rickard replied with two tries for Old Crescent and Seaghan Gleeson and Josh Page got one each. Peter Connolly kicked two conversions and Brian Bennett one.

Newcastle West had a comfortable 38-5 home win over U.L. Bohemian. Dave Foley scored three tries for the home side, Sean Murphy got one and they were also awarded a penalty try. Sean Herlihy kicked four conversions and a penalty. Conor Gilmore was Bohes try scorer.

Garryowen defeated St. Mary’s at Dooradoyle 22-6. Peter Loughran kicked two penalties for the Saints.

Mitchelstown defeated Fethard 15-13 in a game that was transferred to the Carrick-on-Suir pitch. Liam Molan and Josh Evans scored tries for Mitchelstown and Pa McGee kicked a penalty and a conversion. Mitchelstown’s reward is a home tie with Kinsale in the next round.

Charleville defeated Killorglin 30-0. A try by Ger Sheehan and a conversion and penalty by Greg O’Carroll gave Charleville a 10-0 interval lead.
