Kanturk Make Winning Start

Kanturk make winning start in All Ireland Provincial League Championship as progress is made in Munster Junior Cup.

Kanturk opened their Round Robin series with a 13-7 away win over Our Ladys Boys Club Galway. The home side led 7-5 at half time with Kealan Buckley scoring a try for Kanturk. The visitors wrapped it up at the start of the fourth quarter with a penalty from Mark Healy and a try by Sean Cremin.

Wanderers defeated Clogher Valley 21-7 in their opener at the Aviva Stadium and next up for the Leinster champions is a visit to Kanturk on Saturday 5th April.

There were no upsets in the Munster Junior Cup with some big score lines being recorded.

Holders Garryowen advanced to Round Three with a 55-3 home win over Thurles. Geoff Ryan and Alex Wotton scored three tries each for Garryowen; Ethan Moloney got two and Cian Leahy one. Eamonn Connolly kicked four conversions and four penalties. Eoghan O’Dwyer kicked a penalty for Thurles.

St. Senan’s defeated Nenagh Ormond 21-10 to set up an away tie against Garryowen in the next round. David Webb and Eamon O’Donoghue scored tries for Senan’s and Declan Rowe kicked two penalties, drop goal and a conversion. Dinny Slattery replied with a try, conversion and a penalty for Nenagh.

Cork Constitution overcame Tralee 18-14 at Temple Hill. Three penalties from Kieran Crowley to two by Thomas Quinlan gave Tralee a 9-6 half time lead. Aidan O’Donovan extended the Kerry side’s advantage with a try. Tries from Eoin O’Donnell on 62 and 70 minutes and a conversion by Quinlan saw the home side advance to a home tie against Clonmel.

The Tipperary side defeated Highfield 22-18. Conor Cooney scored a try, conversion ad two penalties to give Clonmel a 13-10 interval lead. Highfield were awarded a penalty try and Colm Downes kicked a conversion and a penalty. Two Cooney penalties extended the Tipperary side’s advantage but a try from Brian Carroll and a Downes penalty closed the gap to a point. A fifth penalty from cooney in the final minute ended Highfield’s hopes for another season.

Muskerry proved too strong for Kinsale winning 28-22. Muskerry had tries from Lorcan Collins, Jonathan Buckley, Joe Tracey and Shane Murphy with all four converted by Buckley. Kinsale replied with tries from David Kingston, Damien Kozik and Sean Kingston and Sean Kingston kicked two conversions and a penalty.

Old Christians just edged out Waterford City 25-24. Stuart Lee, Dave O’Driscoll and Alan Duggan scored tries for the winners and Lee added two conversions and two penalties.

Clonakilty defeated Midleton 37-14. Peter Shallow scored two tries for Clonakilty, Ciaran Calnan, JD O’Mahony and Eoin O’Neill also scored tries and Calnan kicked two penalties and three conversions.

Two tries from Niall Clohessy and a Scott O’Sullivan conversion was not enough for Youghal who lost at home to Skibbereen 43-12. Richard Burns and Cian Keegan each got two tries for Skibbereen and Michael Calnan and Niall Hurley one apiece.

Dolphin were the biggest winners on the day beating Killorglin 67-5. Sean McKeown scored three tries for the winners, Andrew O’Leary and Diarmuid Keogh got two, Chris Bannon, Johnny Leary and Killian O’Keeffe got one each. Tommy Duggan kicked seven conversions and Bannon a drop goal. Noel O’Reilly replied with a try for Killorglin.

Killarney lost at home to U.C.C. 23-3. Dave O’Riordan scored a try, conversion and two penalties for the students and Steve Dinan and Jack Robertson also got tries. Paudie Sheahan kicked a penalty for Killarney.

Castleisland defeated Clanwilliam 10-6 in their final league game in Division Two of the Munster Junior League on Friday night last. Con Reynolds scored a try, conversion and penalty for the Kerry side.

Carrick-on-Suir knocked out holders Abbeyfeale 24-17 with a last minute converted try in the Martin O’Sullivan Cup. David Kiersey, Mick Carroll and Sean Cuddihy were Carrick’s try scorers and Charlie Boland kicked three conversions and a penalty The holders had tries from Robert Brown and Michael Roche both converted by David Collins and Tom Hassett added a penalty.

Bandon booked their place in the O’Neill Cup final with a 44-0 away win over Crosshaven. Cathal Crowley and Kevin Lucey scored two tries for Bandon and Jack Murphy and Christian Mulcahy got one each. Richard Walsh converted all six tries and added two penalties.

In the Junior 2 Cup South Cork Constitution made amends for last week’s defeat in the League by Corca Dhuibhne with a 16-9 victory. Dave Clark scored a try for Con’ and Simon Barry converted and also kicked three penalties. Shane Griffin replied with three penalties for the Kerry Gaeltacht side.

Two late penalties from Dave Eustace helped Highfield to a 20-14 away win over Mitchelstown. Gordon Baylor and Jack Newton scored tries for the visitors and Eustace converted both.
