Kilfeacle Cause Big Cup Upset

It was great to see club rugby bring played in the province after a six month break with five games in the opening round of the Bank of Ireland Munster Senior Cup.

The shock of the day was at Morrissey Park where All Ireland Junior Cup holders and Munster Junior League winners Kilfeacle caused the shock of the day with a 22-17 victory over Bruff.

Bruff got off to a great start with a try from Kieran Bennett but tries from Kevin Kinnane and Jack McLoughlin saw the home side lead 10-5 at the interval.

Further tries from Cormac Ryan and McLoughlin and a Willie Staunton conversion edged Kilfeacle 22-5 in front but a late comeback by Bruff yielded tries from Jack O’Grady and Johnny Cleary, one of which Andrew O’Byrne converted.

Kilfeacle will now host Shannon in a second round tie next Saturday.

U.L. Bohemian got the better of Nenagh Ormond with 31-12 victory. A try from Jamie McNamara, a penalty and a conversion by Harry Byrne along with a penalty try had the Limerick side 17-0 ahead at the break.

Joey Conway extended the advantage with an unconverted try before Nenagh hit back with tries from Gerard O’Gorman and John O’Flaherty one of which Conor O’Brien converted. A try by Niall O’Shea converted by Byrne completed the scoring.

A second half comeback by Old Crescent saw them defeat Dolphin at Irish Independent Park 31-24.

The home side led 14-7 at half time with tries from Craig O’Connell and Dave O’Mahony both converted by Conor Flanagan. Kevin Doyle scored Crescent’s try and Ronan McKenna converted.

Flanagan extended Dolphin’s lead with a penalty but two tries from Eoin Murphy, plus tries by Ronan McKenna and Cathal O’Reilly and two McKenna conversions. Rob Reardon scored a late try for Dolphin and Flanagan converted.

Cashel got the better of Clonmel in an exciting Tipperary derby 22-13 at the Spafield. Micky Wilson and Josh Pickering scored tries for Cashel and they were also awarded a penalty try. Dan O’Neill added a conversion and a penalty. Andrew Daly replied with a try for Clonmel and Dylan Cadogan converted and added two penalties.

Sunday’s Well defeated Midleton 27-15 with tries from James Kiernan, James Mulcahy and Cillian Drinan. Rob Egar converted all three tries and kicked two penalties. Midleton replied with tries from Julian Power and Rob Williams. Stuart Lee added a penalty and a conversion.
