Leagues Get Under Way This Weekend

The Ulster Bank League (All Ireland League) and Division 1 of the Munster Junior League get underway this weekend.

The new structures decided by the IRFU for the Ulster Bank League get under way this weekend with twenty six games down for decision.

Defending champions Old Belvedere begin their campaign with a trip to Clifford Park to face Young Munster. The Cookies were disappointed to have lost to Shannon in the semi final of the ODM Munster Senior Cup two weeks ago but will be hopeful to get their campaign off to a winning start in front of their fanatical supporters.

Cork Constitution beaten finalists last season start their campaign with a trip to the Aviva Stadium where they will face newly promoted Lansdowne. Things have not gone well for the Temple Hill side so far this season but coach Brian Walsh will be looking for a big improvement this time out.

Garryowen after a successful ODM Senior Cup campaign with wins over Cork Constitution, Dolphin and Cashel will be full of confidence ahead of their opening tie against St. Mary’s College.

Shannon after a disappointing campaign last time out begin with a home game against Dolphin and will be expected to collect the points.

Bruff begin their campaign in Division 1B with a trip to Dubarry Park to face Buccaneers and will be full of confidence after reaching their second ODM Munster Senior Cup Final and should get off to a winning start.

U.L. Bohemian travel to Belfast to face Belfast Harlequins and will do well to return home with some points.

U.C.C. begin their campaign minus several of last season’s squad and with their coach Conor Twomey due to depart to the Munster Academy, look like they will be in for a tough season. They start their campaign with a home tie against Ballymena and will do well to get something from this encounter.

Midleton are the only Munster side in Division 2A to begin their campaign with a home tie when they face Corinthians. Things have gone well for the east Cork side so far this season and they should start with a home victory over Corinthians.

The other three Munster sides in this Division all struggled last season and it would appear that it will be another tough season. Thomond travel to Kirwan Park to face D.L.S.P., Old Crescent are away to Old Wesley and Clonakilty face a long trek to Belfast to face Malone.

In Division 2B last season’s Junior League winners Cashel start with a trip to Suttonians and despite last week’s mauling by Garryowen in the Cup they should be capable of recording a victory.

The other Tipperary side Nenagh Ormond are also in Dublin and they make history by playing the first Club league game on the main pitch in the Aviva Stadium when they face Wanderers. Highfield could cause a surprise with a win away to Barnhall and Sunday’s Well depleted with the loss of several of their squad and the departure of their coach Mark Butler face a daunting task at home to City of Armagh.

The Munster Junior League Division One kicks off with seven ties down for decision. Richmond will start as favourites to regain the trophy and should begin with a home win over newly promoted Kanturk.

Kilfeacle are at home to Old Christians and will fancy their chances of a victory after reaching the Challenge Clubs Cup Final.

Crosshaven should make their trip to St. Senan’s a winning one, while Tralee will have to win at Skibbereen if they are to be considered serious title challengers.

Galbally making their debut in this Division begin with a home tie against Cobh Pirates, a side who defeated them in the Cup a few weeks ago but home advantage should see Galbally pick up the spoils.

There is a Tipperary derby at Clanwilliam where Clonmel are the visitors and with a victory for Clanwilliam over their opponents already this season the home side will be hoping for a similar result.

The other tie sees Waterpark at home to Thurles and the odds must be on the home side to collect the points.

Charleville and Fermoy meet in the final of the Martin O’Sullivan Cup at Mallow and there should be little between these sides at the finish.
