Little Joy For Munster Clubs In The All Ireland Junior Cup

Another bad day for Munster clubs in the All Ireland Junior Cup with Kanturk the only side to advance to the quarter finals.

Richmond the only Munster team to be given an away tie, were unlucky to lose to Newbridge 27-21. The Kildare side led 24-7 at half time with James Kelly scoring Richmond’s try and Brian Mullins converting. Finbar Hogan added a second try and Richmond were also awarded a penalty try and both were converted by Mullins but it was not enough to keep them in the competition.

Kanturk had a comfortable 35-7 home win over Westport. The Duhallow side led 29-0 at half time. Peter Earlie scored three tries for the winners and Paul Cotter got one. Darragh Meade kicked three conversions, two drop goals and a penalty.

Skibbereen lost at home to Enniscorthy 26-10. The home side were dealt a big blow before the game with the withdrawal of both their half backs but there was no denying the County Wexford side their victory. David Jennings and Ivan Jennings each scored a try for Skibbereen in each half.

Monivea got some consolation for their 2011 Cup final defeat by Crosshaven, when they travelled to Myrtleville and defeated the home side 25-16. Cian Keegan scored a try for Crosshaven and Ian Smith added a conversion and three penalties.

St. Senan’s caused a shock in the in the Munster Junior Clubs Challenge Cup with a 21-10 home win over unbeaten Clonmel. Senan’s Phillip Noone and Clonmel’s Conor Cooney exchanged early penalties before Paul Denn put the visitors ahead with a try which Cooney converted. Eamon O’Donoghue replied immediately with a try for Senans and Noone converted to level. Two penalties from Noone made it 16-10 at half time. A try in the final minute by Ger McNamara sealed victory for the Clare side.

Carrick-on-Suir caused an upset in Division Two of the Munster Junior League with a 19-16 home win over joint leaders Newport. Ritchie Downey scored a try for the winners and Charlie Boland kicked a conversion and four penalties. Darragh Ryan replied with a try for Newport and Philip O’Brien kicked a conversion and three penalties.

Muskerry are now joint leaders with Newport after their 36-12 away win over Dungarvan. Liam O’Donovan nd john Chambers each scored two tries for the visitors and Shane Murphy and Willie Healy got one apiece. Jonathan Buckley kicked three conversions. Olan Murray and Laurence Houlihan replied with tries for Dungarvan and David Hickey kicked a conversion.

Bandon also caused a shock with a 28-21 home win over Presentation. Tim, Jerry and Gearoid Crowley all scored tries for Bandon and Cathal Crowley kicked three penalties and two conversions. Ken Greaney, David Hurley and Alan Daly replied with tries for the Limerick side and Shane O’Brien converted all three.

Mallow are only a point behind the leaders after their narrow 14-9 home win over Kinsale. Two penalties from Peter Murphy to one by Andy Cashman had Kinsale 6-3 ahead at half time. Murphy kicked a third penalty to extend Kinsale’s advantage but Cashman had the sides level with two efforts for Mallow. A late try from Leonard Browne earned the home side the points.

Killarney defeated Youghal 19-15 to keep their challenge on track. Colin McCarthy, Padraig Hallissey and Paul O’Sullivan all scored tries for the Kerry side and Padraig Sheehan kicked two conversions. Alan Frahill-O’Connor and Stephen Kelly replied with tries for Youghal and Keith McCarthy added a conversion and penalty.

Castleisland made it two wins from two with a 20-16 away win over Ennis. Kieran Downey, Mike Cronin and John McCarthy were try scorers for the winners and Sean Riordan kicked a conversion and a penalty. Jeff Russell replied with a try and drop goal for Ennis and David Murphy kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Fermoy are the new leaders in Division Three with a 20-15 victory over Douglas. Four penalties from Eoin Philpott gave Douglas a 12-8 half time lead. Peter Stapleton replying with a try for Fermoy and Joe Lee kicked a penalty. Stapleton and Lee added tries for the North Cork side and Lee kicked a conversion. Douglas’s only reply was a fifth penalty from Philpott.

A last minute try from Paul O’Sullivan earned Scariff an 8-7 home win over Killorglin. Barry Sheehan scored a try for Killorglin which Luke O’Shea converted to cancel out a penalty by Conor McNamara.

Abbeyfeale opened their campaign with a 27-8 home win over Kilrush. Rob Browne, Donagh Kelly and Alan Roche were try scorers for Abbeyfeale who were also awarded a penalty try. Thomas Enright converted two and also added a penalty. Jeff Hayes replied with a try for Kilrush and Paul Conway kicked a penalty.

Waterford City collected maximum points in their opening game with a 34-8 home win over Dunmanway-Bantry Bay. Damien Kennedy scored two tries for the winners and Darren Walsh, Sean O’Mahony, Jason Power and Gary Keane also scored tries. Keane and Danny May each added a conversion. Mark Benn replied with a try for the visitors and Dan McSweeney kicked a penalty.

Ballincollig defeated Charleville 25-0. The winners led 15-0 at half time and had tries from Padraig Flynn, Paul Daly and Glen Murphy. Robert Foulkes scored a fourth try after the break and Denis Galvin kicked a conversion and penalty.

Cobh Pirates defeated Kanturk 18-11 in a Junior Two League South tie. James Frahill and Killian Hawes scored tries for Cobh and Eoin McSweeney kicked a conversion and two penalties.

Bandon were 25-16 winners over Dunmanway-Bantry Bay in the Junior Three League South. Oisin Healy scored two tries for the winners and Gearoid O’Leary and John Barnes got one each. Ivor Helen kicked a conversion and a penalty.
