MAR Celebrate Another Year Of Success
18th March 2016 By Munster Rugby
The annual Munster Association of Referees (MAR) dinner recently took place at the Castletroy Hotel, Limerick.
Speaking at the dinner was MAR President, Eugene Meaney who acknowledged the contribution Munster Referees are making in world rugby.
“MAR referees are representing our club in World Cups, 6 Nations, Rugby Championship, European Cups, Pro 12, B&I Cup, and the Ulster Bank League.
“And it’s not just at the refereeing and assistant referee level”, he continued, “MAR members also contribute at the highest levels as Assessors, TMO’s, citing commissioners and time keepers”.
With the announcement of Pamela Brown claiming the MAR Referee of the Year title and Mossie Keith named MAR Emerging Referee of the Year, Eugene also acknowledged the next generation of up and coming referees.
The tradition of Munster referees on the world stage was reinforced by guest speaker Paddy d’Arcy (MAR).
Paddy, who was conferred with ‘Honorary Life Vice President’ at the ceremony, was the second ever referee from the province to operate on the international stage in 1967.
He regaled the audience with stories and legends of life as a rugby referee in the amateur era but also pointed out that the tradition and respect of Munster officials has become even more valued as the sport has become professional.
