Munster Association Of Referees Welcome New Trial Members
16th November 2020 By The Editor
The IRFU new members induction course for the Munster Association of Referees took place on Saturday, October 31 via Microsoft Teams.
The event was the latest in a series of courses which are the first step in developing the next generation of referees in Munster.
25 people, including five females, took part in the course which was conducted by the IRFU’s Referee Development Manager for Munster, Chris Harrington.
Due to the current government restrictions, attendees completed pre-course modules such as Law & Concussion before the Microsoft Teams event took place.
There was great interaction and enthusiasm from all of those who attended and it is pleasing that 21 of the 25 who attended have now graduated to becoming Trial Members with the Munster Association of Referees. These new members have already attended their weekly meeting and trial member workshop.
A special mention must go to the Club Referee Coordinators who played a major role in this recruitment campaign. The clubs which were represented included Young Munster, UL Bohemians, Ballincollig, Old Crescent, Fermoy, Bruff, St Senans, Crosshaven, Shannon, Killarney, Kilrush, Ennis, Cork Constitution, Mallow, Dungarvan, Midleton, Fethard & District, Clonmel, & Newcastle West.
Referees are vital to ensuring games continue to take place in Munster. Unfortunately, there are not enough MAR referees to officiate at all games every weekend, so if you’re interested in getting involved in refereeing, please contact Chris Harrington (chris.harrington@irfu.ie) and for more information, please click here.
Limerick man George Clancy, who recently announced his retirement from professional refereeing, enjoyed a brilliant career as a referee at the highest level. Click here for our interview with Clancy as he explains how he first started out with the Munster Association of Referees before going on to officiate on the international stage.
