Munster Junior League Gets Underway

St. Senan’s caused a big upset in the opening round Of Division One of the Munster Junior League as Charleville and Killarney collected silverware.

The biggest shock in the opening round of the Junior League was St. Senan’s 17-11 home win over Crosshaven. A Kieran Doran penalty gave Crosshaven a 3-0 interval lead. Doran added a second penalty and Darren Keane scored a try for Crosshaven to lead 11-10. Fernando Gallant replied with a try for the Clare side and Declan Collins converted and also added a penalty. Crosshaven look certain to score a second try but the final pass was intercepted by Daragh McCoy who touched down for the home side and Collins converted.

A conversion by skipper Conor Quaid of a last minute try by Darragh Daly earned Old Christians a 22-20 away win over Kilfeacle. A try by Pierce Breen and a conversion and penalty by Mark Butler had the Tipperary side 10-6 ahead at the interval. Jack O’Sullivan and Charlie Walsh scored further tries for the home side but Conor Mangan punished Kilfeacle’s indiscipline with five penalties.

Favourites Richmond had to rely on a last minute try from Garret Hanlon which Darragh Clancy converted for a 24-17 home victory over newly promoted Kanturk. Emmet Harty scored two tries for the Limerick side and Pat Humphreys one and a Clancy conversion had Richmond 17-14 ahead at half time. Darragh Meade and Philippe Trippier replied with tries for Kanturk and Meade converted both. Meade levelled with a penalty and it looked like the spoils would be shared until Hanlon’s late try.

Galbally made a winning start to their first game in the top flight with a 20-8 home win over Cobh Pirates and thus made amends for their Cup defeat earlier in the season by the same opposition. Galbally led 14-3 at half time with tries from Niall McNamara and James Taylor both of which Declan Guerin converted. Eamon Ronan replied with a penalty for the visitors. Sean Burke kicked two penalties in the second half for the Co. Limerick side and Cobh replied with a try from Alan Langford.

Skibbereen proved too strong for Tralee in their opening game at the West Cork venue as they emerged 28-15 victors. A try by Sean O’Neill and a conversion and penalty by Ger Hurley had the home side 10-3 ahead at the short whistle. Garrett Walsh replied with a penalty for the Kerry side. Jack O’Driscoll and Hurley added further tries after the break and Hurley kicked a conversion and two penalties. Dan O’Connor and Cian Dillane replied with tries for the visitors and Brian Mullins added a conversion.

Clonmel got revenge for their Cup defeat by Clanwilliam earlier in the season with a 16-10 victory at Clanwilliam Park. Clonmel led 9-3 at half time with three penalties from Ben Martin to one by Derek Shields. Clonmel extended their advantage with a try by Robbie Carroll which Martin converted. A last minute try by Sean Whelan which Shields converted secured a losing bonus point for the home side.

Waterpark ran in nine tries in their 62-0 victory over Thurles at Ballinakill. Kevin Phelan and Paddy Kiersey scored two tries each for the winners and Colin Walsh, Ben Cunningham, Jamie Walsh, Alistair McCormack and Murray Kinsella got one apiece. John Flynn kicked seven conversions and a penalty.

Charleville won the Martin O’Sullivan Cup Final with a dramatic injury time try to defeat Fermoy 16-13 at Mallow. Two penalties from Frankie Holly to one by Cathal O’Keeffe had Charleville 6-3 in front at half time. Holly kicked a drop goal to increase his side’s advantage. Fermoy rallied with a penalty and a conversion of a penalty try by Joe Lee to lead 13-9. With the game in injury time, a great drive over the line by the Charleville pack saw Ger Sheehan touchdown and Holly converted to secure victory.

Killarney won the McElligott Cup with a 23-3 victory over Corca Dhuibhne under the lights in Castleisland on Saturday night. Padraig Hallissey scored a try in each half for the winners and Paudie Sheahan converted both and also added three penalties. Kevin Morrissey replied with a penalty for the West Kerry Gaeltacht side.

Cork Constitution defeated U.C.C. 30-11 in the Munster Seconds League at Temple Hill. Constitution led 17-3 at half time with tries from Conor Desmond and Alan Ross. Peter O’Sullivan converted both and also kicked a penalty. Daryl Foley replied with a penalty for the students. Ciaran Stokes scored a third try for Con’ and O’Sullivan converted and also kicked two further penalties. Sean Keohane replied with a try for the students.

Dolphin defeated Cobh Pirates 27-7 in the Junior 2 League. Tim Cotter scored two tries for the winners and Trevor O’Sullivan and Martin Aherne one, with Aherne converting two and also kicking a penalty. Alan Walley was Cobh’s try scorer and Conor O’Regan converted.

Carrigaline continued their good run with a 10-8 home win over Bandon. Dave O’Donoghue scored a try for the winners and John Tait kicked a conversion and a penalty.

Ballincollig and Highfield shared the spoils after a 17-17 draw. John Harvey and Thomas Milkontas scored tries for Ballincollig and Paul Dinneen converted both and also added a penalty.

Ollie O’Regan was Skibbereen’s try scorer in their 19-3 away win over Clonakilty. Mark Kingston kicked a conversion and four penalties.
