Munster Junior League Gets Underway.

The opening games in all three divisions of the Munster Junior league went ahead at the weekend with one or two upsets.

In the First Divisions there were big wins for Cashel, Richmond and Tralee.

At Rathcooney defending champions Richmond collected maximum points with a 42-15 win over Old Christians. Emmet Harty scored two tries for the winners and Finbar Hogan, Moss O’Connor, Michael Kelleher also scored tries withJeff McNamara kicking four conversions and three penalties. Rob Mackessy and Aidan Tobin were try scorers for the home side Tobin kicked a conversion and penalty.

Cashel opened their account with a 76-12 win over Ballincollig at Tanner Park.

Tralee started their campaign with a 46-10 home win over St. Senan’s. Jonathan Morath, Gareth Walsh, Dermot O’Sullivan, Jason Thong, John Gilmartin and Brian Mullins all scored tries for the Kerry side. Mullins kicked five conversions and two penalties. Ger Hall scored a try for the Clare side and Jake Egan converted and Declan Collins kicked a penalty.

The big shock was at Kilfeacle when newly promoted Clanwilliam won the local derby 20-9. Richard Giles opened the scoring with a try for Clanwilliam but three penalties by Shane Luby had the home side 9-5 ahead at the break. Two tries from Ian O’Rahelly and one by Viv Grisewood secured a bonus point win for the visitors.

Crosshaven defeated Thurles 32-15. Ross O’Connell, Mick Buckley and Darren O’Keeffe scored tries for the winners. Paul Memory kicked two penalties and Cian McGovern added three penalties and a conversion.

Two late tries denied Skibbereen victory away to Clonmel as the home side won 25-15. Clonmel led 11-0 at half time with a try by Ronan Cross and two penalties by Danny Lyons. Skibbereen hit back with David Shannon scoring a try, conversion and penalty and a second try by Michael Limerick. A late rally by the home side produced tries from Cross and Conor Cooney both converted by Lyons.

A penalty by Mark Chandler was not enough for Cobh Pirates who lost at home to Waterpark 19-3. A try by Kevin Phelan converted by Jared Dunbar had the visitors 7-3 at half time. Waterpark added tries from Mick McCarthy and Shane Kavanagh and Dunbar converted one.

Mallow were the only side to collect maximum points in the Second Division as they defeated Castleisland 32-6. A try by David Walsh and a conversion and penalty by Brian Morris had the home side 10-6 in front at the break. They added tries from Brian Ward, Len Browne and Rory McSherry and Morris converted two of the tries and also added a penalty.

The big shock was St. Mary’s 19-10 away win over Kinsale. The sides were level 10-10 with fifteen minutes to go with Kinsale getting tries from Edouard Brouard-Lemaire and Frazer Hodgson. Glen O’Callaghan and Darren Clancy scored tries for Mary’s and three late penalties from Sean Lyons earned the visitors the points.

Favourites Galbally denied Muskerry a losing bonus point with a late try for a 21-12 victory. Philip Moore, Ian Ryan and Niall McNamara scored tries for the winners and Liam Casey added two penalties. Paddy Dennehy and Eoin Keohane kicked two penalties each for the Mid Cork side.

Youghal came from 12-5 down at half time to defeat Ennis 13-12. Alan Fox and Stephen Kelly scored tries for Youghal and Jonathon Ormond kicked a penalty. Bryan Murphy replied with four penalties for the visitors

Kanturk defeated Newcastle West 22-17. Peter Earley scored a try for Kanturk and Darragh Meade kicked a conversion and five penalties. Sean Berkery and Tommy Kelleher scored tries for the visitors and Kelleher kicked a conversion and penalty and Darren Hayes also added a conversion.

Bandon were 20-16 winners over Newport 20-16. The home side trailed 9-7 at half time with Philip Powell scoring a try for Bandon and Jason Milligan converted. David Ahern put the home side ahead with a penalty and Eoin O’Donovan added a try, conversion and penalty.

A Shane Corkery penalty was not enough for Charleville who lost at home to Killarney 24-3.

Scariff recorded their first ever away win in the Third Division with a 15-11 win over Carrick-on-Suir. Barry Gibbons and Robert Madden scored tries for Scariff and Madden kicked a conversion and a penalty. David Kiersey scored a try for Carrick and Michael Cronin kicked two penalties.

Waterford City bounced back after last week’s Cup final defeat with a 35-10 home win over Kilrush. Damien Kennedy scored four tries and Darren Walsh got two. Aaron Foskin kicked a conversion and penalty.

Ciaran Collins scored a try, conversion and three penalties in Corca Dhuibhne’s 16-10 away win over Shandon. Andrew Quinlan replied with a try for Shandon and Barry Leahy kicked a conversion and penalty.

Conor Prendeville and Alan Behan scored tries for Abbeyfeale in their 13-6 away win over Douglas.

Dungarvan collected maximum points with a 19-10 away win over Bantry Bay.

Cork Constitutionran in eight tries in their 55-5 home win over Midleton in the Munster 2nds League. Prop Aidan Foley scored four tries and Billy Newman, Conor Desmond, Dave McSweeney and Robert Clune got one each with Peter O’Sullivan kicking seven conversions and a penalty.

A last minute converted try denied Cobh Pirates the points in their Junior 2 League game away to Old Christians as they lost 22-20. Peter Mullen scored two tries for Cobh and Cian Connolly kicked two conversions and two penalties.

Padraig Flynn, Fergal Considine, Mark Chapman and Andy Coughlan were try scorers for Ballincollig in their 29-3 home win over Muskerry. Kevin Ryan kicked three conversions and a penalty and Eoin Corcoran replied with a penalty for Muskerry.

Dolphin defeated Kinsale 28-17 with two tries from Dave Griffin and one by Larry Buckley. Pat Ahern converted two of the tries and also added three penalties.
