Munster Junior Roundup

Seven of this season’s quarter finalists in the Munster Junior Cup have been decided after six more games in the competition were played at the weekend.

Kilfeacle won the big Tipperary derby tie with a 21-13 win over Clanwilliam at “The Hill” in a game that boiled over on occasions. Kilfeacle led 13-5 at half time with a try from Ger Luby and a try and penalty by Shane Luby. Ian Quinlan replied with a try for Clanwilliam.
Jack O’Sullivan scored a third try for the winners and Shane Luby kicked a penalty. Ian Quinlan replied with a second try for Clanwilliam and Richard Childs kicked a penalty.

Cork Constitution had to battle all the way for a hard earned 21-17 away win over Richmond at Richmond Park. The home side’s cause was not helped by an injury to Michael Kelleher in the early minutes of the game and his absence was a big loss to the home side.
Peter O’Sullivan opened the scoring with a penalty after five minutes for Constitution but Daragh Frawley levelled on thirteen minutes. Mark Desmond scored a try for the visitors mid way through the half and O’Sullivan’s conversion and a second penalty had Constitution 13-3 ahead at half time. The home side were awarded a penalty try on sixty minutes and Frawley converted to close the gap to three points. A third O’Sullivan penalty ten minutes from time which was followed by a Simon Hanbidge try two minutes from time put the Temple Hill side into a commanding lead. Richmond rallied and Stephen Clancy got in for a try which Jeff McNamara converted but it was not enough to stop the visitors advancing.

Dolphin booked their place in the last eight with a 29-21 victory over Shannon at Musgrave Park. Rob O’Herlihy, Eoin Shaughnessy, Niall O’Driscoll, Tommy Parker and Dan O’Brien were try scorers for the home side and Harry Fleming kicked two conversions.

Galbally needed extra time to see off the challenge of First Division side Skibbereen on a 13-3 scoreline.
Darren Guerin kicked a penalty to give Galbally a 3-0 half time lead. With ten minutes remaining David Shannon tied up the scores with a penalty for Skibbereen to send the game into extra time. Guerin put the home side back in front with his second penalty in the second period of extra time and an intercept by Tony Hennebry on his own Twenty Two saw him race away to score a try which Guerin converted.

Tralee defeated Waterpark 33-5 at O’Dowd Park. The winners led 21-0 at the interval with tries from Dan O’Connor, Joe Costello and Gareth Walsh with Walsh converting all three. Michael Deane and Jonathan Morath scored second half tries and Walsh converted one.

Garryowen booked their place in the fifth round and a home tie against Thomond next week after their 50-7 home win over Thurles. Diarmuid McCarthy and Brian Smith scored two tries each for the Limerick side and John Mark Griffin, Barry Sheehan, Kevin O’Riordan and Derry O’Connor got one apiece. Jamie Gavin kicked five conversions.

The draw for the quarter finals which are scheduled for Sunday 13th March with a 2.30 kick off is –

Cork Constitution v Garryowen / Thomond.

In the Munster Junior Plate Bandon booked their place in the semi final after their 15-8 home win over Sunday’s Well. The home side raced into an early 15-0 lead with tries from Richard Milner and Sean O’Riordan and Eoghan O’Donovan kicked a penalty and a conversion. A try by Francis Moynihan left it 15-5 at the break and the ‘Well’s only reply in the second half was a penalty from Colin Corkery.

Bandon will now travel to Newport in the semi final after the Tipperary side received a walk over from Abbeyfeale.

Mallow’s promotion hopes from Division Two of the Munster Junior League were dealt a big blow when they lost away to St. Mary’s 13-10. A try from David Walsh gave Mallow a 5-0 half time lead. Ger Ryan scored a try for the home side and Sean Lyons kicked a conversion and penalty. Walsh scored a second try to tie up the scores but in the final minute Lyons kicked his second penalty to give Mary’s the points.

The top of the table clash in Division Three ended all square when leaders Presentation’ winning run came to a halt at Rathuard after a 6-6 draw with Scariff. Mark Phair kicked the home side into the lead twice with penalties and each time James Kelly replied for Scariff.

Waterford City have moved up to second place after their 33-11 away win over Killorglin. Sean O’Mahony scored two tries for the winners and Len Power, Rory Hughes and Jason Power got one each. Aaron Foskin kicked two penalties and a conversion.

Four penalties from Conor Buckley helped Shandon to a share of the spoils after they drew with Dungarvan 12-12 at Whitechurch.

Ballincollig and Dolphin reached the final of the South Munster Junior Two League. A try by Killian Walsh converted by Pat Ahern earned Dolphin a 7-0 away win over Clonakilty.

Ballincollig defeated Tralee 17-12 with tries from Shane Campbell, Kevin Ryan and Conor Owens. Ryan added one conversion.

Cork Transport defeated Dolphin 39-7 to win the South Munster Division Three B title at the Corn Field.
