Munster Rugby Coaching Courses 2022/23
27th September 2022 By The Editor
The Munster Rugby coaching course programme commences this weekend with an IRFU Coaching Children course in both Musgrave Park and the University of Limerick.
These are two of the nine courses being delivered throughout October.
The IRFU coaching courses are aimed to support coaches and their development, by increasing and enhancing their knowledge of the game.
The modules covered on the courses range from the role of the coach and planning rugby sessions to technical understanding of scrum, lineout, tackle etc.
The coaching children award is designed for coaches of mini rugby, coaching between U6 to U12. The main essence of this course is the provision of FUNdamental skills, supporting the players development of movement and rugby understanding through an enjoyable experience.
The coaching youth award is designed for coaches of U13-U16 players and focuses on the 15-a-side game.
This course supports coaches of adolescent players and those relatively new to the 15-a-side game. Coaches are aligned to the Munster Rugby cornerstones program, introduced good practice on rugby Unit play and the principles of playing the game.
The senior coaching award is for coaches of U18 and Adult levels and increases the coaches understanding of technical and tactical skills. Coaches are encouraged to challenge player competencies and evolve their understanding of the principles of attack and defence, individual skills, and unit skill development.
Commenting on the launch of the courses this week, Munster Rugby Coach and Player Development Manager Keith Murphy said: “We are delighted again this season to offer a suite of courses across the province. We will deliver a children and youth course in the 4 regions and our annual senior course will be held in Musgrave Park this year. We are also finalising two more courses to be delivered in November, which would surpass our operational expectations for this time of year.”
This season the IRFU are launching the Active Coach Badge, following a pilot season last year. This is a CPD program to supplement coaching awards.
Commenting on this programme, Murphy said: “This is an exciting time for coach development in the IRFU. We have introduced a new Qualification process which is aligned to Rugby Connect and includes a suite of informal offerings for coaches to continue their personal development.
“These are both online and face-to-face offerings, providing coaches with CPD points which are aligned to their qualification. Coaches are encouraged to attend a coaching course and complete at least 1 CPD offering to attain their appropriate qualification. Each year thereafter the minimum requirement will be at least 1 CPD to maintain that qualification.”
