Munster Rugby Support Swedish Academy
17th June 2013 By Munster Rugby
Munster Rugby Elite Development Officer Colm McMahon and Coach Development Officer Keith Murphy recently travelled to Bosun Sports Complex, on the outskirts of Stockholm, to assist with the newly developed Sweden Rugby Union’s Academy programme.
Players aged 17 to 20 years were given technical direction to the core areas of the game including catch/pass technique, continuity, decision making, tackle technique, breakdown contest, defence and strategic alignment.
Cork native David Hanley has been appointed Technical Director of the Sweden Rugby Union and in his short time involved has helped develop a Regional Development and National Academy programme.
Hanley, an IRFU Stage 3 accredited coach and former Christian Brothers College and Sunday’s Well player has been instrumental in the rapid growth of rugby in Sweden.
Over the past number of months Munster Rugby’s Coaching staff have assisted with the development of domestic and national programmes both on and off the pitch and has seen Swedish Rugby make huge strides since the introduction of the IRB Developing Nations initiative.
With almost 4,500 registered players, Sweeden Rugby Football Union is currently ranked 32 in the world having recently been promoted to IRB Division 1B.
